Hip Gear Screen Pad Without Screen

My friend has an Xbox and I recently got a Hip Gear Screen Pad for a portable I am working on. I was wondering if I remove the screen part with it would still run without ruining the Xbox.

Yes. You can plug it in as a controller and it will function perfectly. I don't know where you got the "ruin the xbox" idea...

I thought that everything was connected and that it might short the controller port.

Aren't there separate plugs for the controller part and the screen part? The screen and controller parts aren't really connected at all from what I saw with the PS2 model.
