GP2x Questions
I'm finally giving in and getting one! I just had some questions about emulation, homebrew scene, and USB interface for it. First of all, how fast is Neo-Geo, SNES, and GBA? Are they at full-speed yet? And how is PSX emulation coming along? Do you think it will reach full speed sometime in the future? Also, what are some good commercial/homebrew games for the GP2x? And as for USB support, I've heard you can use keyboards with the GP2x; so could you, by any chance, use game controllers for 2 player support? Perhaps a wired 360 controller? Also, are there any text editors for the GP2x? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to get my facts straight before going through with this.
Also, in your opinion, what is the best emulator for:
NES
SNES
Neo Geo
GBA
PSX
MAME
Genesis
Amiga
Thanks!

Browse around a bit.
For example, out of the 3 listed SNES emus,
Squidge SNES is rated:
Status Released and playable
Game Quality 4/5
and things describing them such as this:

Although, nothing beats Triton and other's opinion, since they actually OWN them.DrPocketSNES is a fullspeed SNES emulator. Reesy combined the current SquidgeSNES with the renderer of PocketSNES and now we've got an SNES Emulator that runs most games fullspeed (with some framskip) with sound at 250 MHz - INCLUDING transparencies and partial SuperFX chip support!
Hey, sup?

Me having no gp2x (I NEED one. I would trade my gc for one) can only tell you as much as "Squidgesnes" probably has your best chance in the category of snes emus. Get all 3 for different compatable games. My friend has one.

PSP SUCKS !
I think neo goe is full speed. For genesis I have no preference they both are full speed. Last time I checked there are 3 gba emu's in the works. And the one I used ran final fantasy tactics very nice. For PS1 don't get your hopes up to high, the lack of a 3d accelerater in the gp2x means that ps1 will never be full speed. But as it improves some games will run ok. For the snes I would use squidgesomething or what ever it is, that runs just fine and it plays just like my snes does. Pm me or send me a instant message anytime with questions. And If you want the emu's with the bios already or gp2x converted tv shows and movies and so much more, already then google gp2x torrent and the first link should treat you fine.

neogeo is fullspeed or close to it, metalslug runs great on gngeo! genesis is fulspeed on DRMD squidgesnes with reesys changes is pretty good from what i hear (havent used it recently) psx will never be 100% full speed but most games should be playable plus ive heard that zodttd is going to be scratchcoding one!. ive also heard that the gba emulator is pretty good and getting better all the time. lots of info and help can be found on gp32x.com forums and i get all my downloads from the archive at archive.gp2x.de. im not positive about the usb host stuff as i havent got my host adapter built yet. i think there is a text editor tho. any questions feel free to ask me on aim lol

Re: GP2x Questions
SNES is fullspeed (mostly) with PocketSnes. GBA will be at some time in the future. I haven't used the Neo-Geo emulator, but I've heard it's close to full-speed.CronoTriggerfan wrote:I'm finally giving in and getting one! It's not spectacular, and not fullspeed, and will probably never be fullspeed, but may reach more playable levels.CronoTriggerfan wrote:And how is PSX emulation coming along? Do you think it will reach full speed sometime in the future?
SuperTux, ReWord, and Vektar are fun. Those are the only ones I've had a chance to try out (I just got my GP2X a few weeks ago.).CronoTriggerfan wrote:Also, what are some good commercial/homebrew games for the GP2x?
Not sure about this; I'm sure you'd need the breakout board though.CronoTriggerfan wrote:And as for USB support, I've heard you can use keyboards with the GP2x; so could you, by any chance, use game controllers for 2 player support? Perhaps a wired 360 controller?
I'm not sure if any can edit text, but there are numerous text readers for GP2X. Flite is a cool little utility that READS text to you. It can be amusing when it reads wikipedia articles on... funny words.CronoTriggerfan wrote:Also, are there any text editors for the GP2x?
CronoTriggerfan wrote:Sorry for all the questions, I just want to get my facts straight before going through with this.
Also, in your opinion, what is the best emulator for:
NES - I use GPFCE, haven't tried any others.
SNES - PocketSnes or Squidgesnes, some games work better on a specific one, but PocketSnes is most compatible. Both pretty much require overclocking for fullspeed.
Neo Geo - haven't tried it.
GBA - GpSP is coming along nicely, and will be fullspeed at some point, but not yet.
PSX - PSX4GP2X - see above
MAME - MAME GP2X
Genesis - DrMegaDrive - fullspeed
Amiga - UAE4all - haven't used it.
Your welcome! There seems to be a large demand for GP2X info right now. You can reach me on AIM once I put that in my profile (should be pretty soon).CronoTriggerfan wrote: Thanks!

One more thing, when in doubt, reformat the SD card. My SD card kept pretending that 700MB of it was taken up in addition to what was actually there. A reformat fixed the problem.

Thanks for the answers, guys, I'll install the suggested emus when my gp2x comes and give you my review!
Although now I have a different problem. Where should I get the gp2x? I was looking at www.gp2x.co.uk as my first choice, it seemed like the best deal; although I was wondering if you guys found anywhere with the same kind of deal for cheaper. And on the gp2x.co.uk site, is the overclock from 240mhz to 266mhz worth it? Again, keep in mind that I'm really in this for SNES and Neo Geo primarily, and I would like to play a few games for GBA and PSX that are near full-speed.
On that note, has anyone tried FFVII on PSX emu for the gp2x? Thanks!

For what you want I would really suggest the psp, ive had both the 2X and currently a psp and i definitely prefer the psp. Full speed psone emulation near full speed GBA, very fast almost full speed for every game i've played but the yoshis island in SNES emulation and fast NeoGeo emulation. People complain about the battery life but i get ~10 hours with the extended life battery i bought for 5$ on ebay that is the same exact size as the original battery. Plus you also get commercial games with it which are very easy to pirate. Cost really wasnt a big deal for me though, you can get a used GP2X for around 90$ now but if you look hard enough you can find a downgradeable psp for 70$CronoTriggerfan wrote:Thanks for the answers, guys, I'll install the suggested emus when my gp2x comes and give you my review!

Really? Jeez, that's a bummer, it's definitely the best package I've seen so far...gamemasterAS wrote:Theres a vid of ff7 playing online. And I ordered from that site and never got mine, they said I only ordered the shipping. Only after I sent 5 emails and waited a couple of weeks.
Can anyone else confirm this?

Well, I've found an alternate seller, who happens to be the official US distributor of the GP2x. So now what it really comes down to is the following: is the 240 to 266MHZ overclock offered in the Power Pack really worth it? And how would one overclock their GP2x if they got the 240MHZ version and wished to upgrade it themselves? Is this done through hardmods or softmods? Thanks!

You could just walk into a store and get a PSP Entertainment Pack for 249. Chances are you'll get 2.71 firmware.
I owned a PSP, than a GP2X, than a DS, and now a PSP...again
These are my very qualified opinions on the GP2X and PSP.
8bit Emulation:
PSP: Excellent
GP2X: Excellent
16bit Emulation:
PSP: Excellent
GP2X: Excellent
PSX Emulation:
PSP: Excellent
GP2X: poor (eventually up to average)
N64 Emulation:
PSP: poor (eventually up to average) (Hey, I play Mario64 at 6~11 fps, without frameskip[not implemented yet, it seems])
GP2X: none
Battery Life (during Emulation):
PSP: Don't know, it plays through the day and charges at night!
GP2X: 2100 mah batteries gave me ~5 hours play time.
Screen:
PSP: MY first PSP gave me headaches, my current PSP does not.
GP2X: Lower resolution, but basically on par.
Homebrew:
PSP: You get your standard assortment of Doom interpretters and Tetris knockoffs.
GP2X: Well, you get Quake I, which is pretty neat, along with the standard assortment of cheap knockoffs.
Price:
PSP: 159 used, 199 new, 249 for PSP + 1GB stick + commercial game + movie
GP2X: 189 new...don't know any more stats on that. Don't remember whether it comes with a memory card or not.
Some of you seem to worship the GP2X like its a religion, but it really isn't god's gift to Man like you think it is. Pety Tetris and Bust-a-move clones aside, the PSP does the same and more, at virtually the same price if not less (figuring in memory cards and other necessary items). I mean, I play FF7, Castlevania: SOTN, and Crash Bandicoot full speed with sound. The GP2X will probably never offer that. And, Hell, god forbid you actually want to spend money on a commercial game, but if you ever feel the sinful inkling to play a first-party title you have that option open to you.
