ATHF Publicity Stunt Scares Cities

Post by bicostp »

Apparently Turner Broadcasting has accepted blame for "suspicious packages" in cities such as Boston, New York, and Los Angles. They're giant LED throwies that flash an image of Initnot (sp? the mooninite flaunting his trademark obscene gesture. Of course the bomb squad was called in and everything... I think it's a stunt for the upcoming ATHF movie.

The only thing suspicious about them is the fact hat they were under bridges, in mass transit stations, and hanging 20 feet off the ground at Fenway Park. Now if only someone had told the police what they were doing beforehand...

This just shows the kind of paranoia that strikes fear into everyone who sees something out of the ordinary in this security paranoid post-9/11 world of ours. (Remember Eon8? ZOMFG the EDN OF TiEH INTERNETS!!!1!11eveventy!1~) I think it's a lot like a little kid not riding their bicycle because they fell off it once.

Actually the first one was discovered by a bus rider who saw it 15 feet over the road deck in the rafters. It shut down the Orange line bus, and eventually the whole bridge.

A quote from the Turner statement: "The packages in question are magnetic lights that pose no danger" MAGNETIC LIGHTS!! Just when I thought LED throwies couldn't get more awesome... they make one based on a mooninite. 8)

The WHDH news story page has a video of the press conference.

Theory: The advertisers knew this would happen all along and decided to use public paranoia to get so free publicity.

Think about it, what better a way to garner free international publicity for an upcoming movie? As often as we have been inundated in the US by this, think about how many foreign markets have heard about it now as well.

As for the whole "ARGH, the BOMB," scenario, this just further proves my hypothesis: People are stupid. Not on a personal level, but as a whole, people tend to be idiots more than they are cool and controlling. Eh, c'est la vie. :)

This reminds me of when some high-schoolers put up paper mario item boxes (ala the original SMB) all over town on the aniversery of some Nintendo product or another. The idea was pretty neat, though they probably should have let people know first ~_~
