Mine would have to be either Doom, starcraft, or unreal tournament.

I downloaded that, but never played it. What did you put for the ID number field on the sign up form? (that's what hung me up when I was trying to make an account)

Any way Battlefield: Vietnam is a very fun game online, especially when you get lots of players and the map turns into a total free-for-all.

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is one of my favorite games. Free and fun. Also halo is good.

Tremulous or Nexuis, both are based upon either a Quake 1 or Quake 3 GPL'd engine source, with a lot of improvements. Loads of people play too. They are FREEWARE as well. Can't beat a free fun, online game.

I generally dislike non-MMO online play, though I was pretty good at Unreal Tournament deathmatch (non of that instagib nonsense) against classmates, and I was unbeatable in low gravity situations.

I played PlanetSide. There isn't an fps that can match the epic feel of PlanetSide, except for the other opcoming MMOFPS's. Great stuff there. Being an FPS it is all based on actual playing ability. I very good shot can best even the long-time veterans, easily. As you progress you can focus on hacking, medic duties, or sniping, maybe some anti-vehicular stuff, then some generic shooting, or using the MAX armor suits, driving, being a gunner, flying, all manner of things.

I played WoW. Blizzard obviously knows what they are doing. Despite running on older technologies, the colorful environments can really pull you in. You can climb the mountainous barriers between zones- no loading times. You can find hidden airfields. You have all manner of unusually high-tech gadgetry, like aircraft, firearms, and self-propelled siege engines. However, you can only choose between being humanoid or a hideous cow person. Also, you are allowed almost zero initial character customization. You can choose between a couple bitmapped faces, choose between a couple eye colors, and choose from a couple hair and beard styles. Any vision of your character you may have is forced into a generic cookie cutter. This is a major let down.

I played Everquest. What can I say? It's a game designed a decade ago. The graphics have been upgraded since then, but the game always seemed to shove dozens upon dozens of obscure skills at you from the beginning, as well as leaving you hanging when it comes down to finding quest related things. However, it may have been improved since then, and the world is incredibly huge.

I played Anarchy Online. It's Everquest in the future. Boring. If I want to run around shooting energy (lasers) at monsters (aliens), I'll stick with fantasy games. Maybe I didn't give it a chance. Also, it was free for a year, so I had nothing to lose.

I played EVE Online. This is the only choice in starship-based scifi MMORPG's. This is the WoW of science fiction in terms of player base and popularity, though it lacks in most other areas. The skill levelling is based on real-time- read: you will permanently be stuck behind all those who started before you. The most sociable among us would enjoy this game. I think it could be kinda fun if you get into a good corp (guild) right away.

I played Earth and Beyond. There isn't a better MMO than this one...period. Unfortunately, it doesn't exist anymore. The EnB emulation team is making great progress on resurrecting this wonderful title, but don't expect full playability this year.

I played Everquest 2. I guess you could say I saved the best for last. Everquest 2 was initially incredibly boring and monotonous. You'd grind, then grind, then grind....you had no incentive to explore and there was little in the world for you to experience. The EQ2 developers have made incredible strides since then. I'd say the fun factor of Everquest 2 is now just about on par with WoW. Luckily, unlike WoW, Everquest 2 has other things going for it: the graphics engine is based on much newer technologies; the amount of initial character customization is phenomenal; and, best of all, this game has rat poeple. The rat people were the thing that tipped me in this direction. Finally I could be something both non-human and fitting to my personality.

By the way, Dark Elves, High Elves, Dwarves, Undead...they're all just human- they're all the same. Why bind yourself to such a narrow vision when games allow you whole new worlds?
