Need help finding network software

Ok guys as I'll be using my mac more for homework I'd like to get files over to it from my windows hard drive fast and with ease. So would a FTP client work? If that will, whats a good free client?

What OS are you running on the PC? I know Win2k Server allows you to do cross-platform file sharing, although I'm not sure about regular Win2k or XP. If you wanted to get files on your PC from your Mac it would be a piece of cake, just turn on file sharing and make your HD or a folder on it shared and you could just copy stuff from it on your PC. I'm not sure how one would do it the other way though.

Personally I would ethernet network them together through a network hub or switch (since you are using two computers a switch is cheaper and will get the job done). Just open the computers to the network and copy what you want.
I believe this would work cross platforms because not only are files files, but network protocol has to be the same otherwise Macs would not be able to use the SAME broadband internet connections that Win based computers use. If the protocols and initial data are the same then any system can link up.
Try it out. I dont see why it would not work.

You could also just network them straight together with a crossover ethernet cable.

Well I have XP home, on this computer. Looks like I'm going to use the old hub my dad gave me. One more question when I connect the mac to the windows computer, what should I use? Right now I'm learning linux but havent gotten into the nitty gritty yet.

Oh, I thought you already had them networked. Yeah, doing that is a neccessity.

While network protocol these days is standard across all platforms (although I think Apple still supports it's old Apple Talk protocol) how each OS interprets the packets is different. Yes, Macs can use the same internet connection as PCs, because protocols like HTTP and FTP are standards. Network file-sharing is a different story. If Sparkfist can figure out how to activate file sharing on his PC, I can tell him how to access it on his Mac. Unfortunately, I use 2k and have very little experience with XP, so I can't help him there.

Well I have passive FTP enables (says for the internet connection compatablilty), and under my connections there is an option to aloue othrer computers to use my computer for internet. I know that this might not be what you ca nuse to help me.

As for moving stuff, just things that I really want. certain files. I'm not looking to do something like bring over a program that is written for windows. Also can I stream things like video over my network?

If you can view files and grab them from one computer to another, yes you could stream files from computers. Only problem is that you have to take into consideration the speed of the network. If you are running on a 10Base-T ethernet network then you could not feesibly stream a huge video file very well.
Just like the internet, you can only stream things that your connection would allow through.

Also, to BlackSix, yeah I figured that it would be interpreted differently. And thanks about file info and such.

I wish I had a G5, its a G3.

6bg HD (I will plan to add the extra 10 I have lying around as a slave and then plan to just copy the master to a bigger one once I get a bigger one)
