Reproduce the SNES?

this would be a great enhancments to the snes portables if this worked, but would only one person get the resized snes board, or would you plan to make a lot of them?

seriously other than knowing that logic level cloning can be done via fpga im practically useless, i can scout around and try and find some people that might help but its unlikely, this project is very relavent to my intrests tho so lets see if we can keep the ball rolling so to speak and see if we can go somewhere with this

While I'm all for the idea of a small, possibly even single-chip SNES, what you're talking about sounds an awful lot like emulation; plenty of devices, many of them portable, can do exactly what you're proposing, so why re-invent the wheel? As far as making a super-tiny SNES goes, the new FC Twins are ridiculously small, and offer full support for every SNES game we've tested here so far.Dr.Loc wrote:thx for all the answers!![]()
Is it also possible to connect this small snesp with an memory module for example an sd-card and load some roms on it? For example you buy an empty snes flashcard and connect this with your snes-system and your sd-card. If you want to play a rom the sd-card load it into the flash-memory...

Despite the fact that I think it'd be difficult and a hassle to do something that's really completely unnecessary, it still sounds like a fun project to be a part of!

In my opinion, its not worth the work.
The super FX dev board recently posted over at the Assembler.org forums contains (most of) an entire SNES on a 3"x3" square (mounted to an ISA card). Now, thats pretty damn tiny. From what i can tell, the memory ICs are not on this board (at least not the top.
The FC Twin board is only about 4"x4" square, and thats complete including the cart connector and RGB (composite encoder is on the back board). You would have a terribly hard time making anything smaller than this, unless you plan on investing serious amounts of time and money. This is already damn small, and runs 100% of the games i own perfectly.
If you still want to do it, more power to you. But for someone just learning, your going in way over your head.

ooh. im in a course where we do FPGAs. just last week i "designed" (followed the lab manual) a binary multiplier. 
anyways. i dont have my own FPGA. but i mean. down the road when i actually understand VHDL a little better and if we find out where to get a sub-$500 FPGA, im in.
i could help lay out PCBs too.
