Windows Vista: a 64-bit operating system that offers nothing useful over a 32-bit extension and graphical shell for a 16-bit patch to an 8-bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit microprocessor, written by a 2-bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.

Talking about bits, here's a joke I've made up. Some people will probably complain and even PM me, telling me that the joke is wrong. It's completely correct, if you think it's wrong, you just don't get it. (:

best I could think of... I suppose it makes things a bit confusing, but that may actually be a good thing

Even better! With the whole Vista Liscensing thing, if you switch processors, it detects that as the second computer in your liscense. But on the upside, you can use flahsdrives as RAM

Why would you want to use flash drives as RAM? They only last a few hundred thousand read/write cycles, and they're more expensive per gigabyte than hard drives. (Hard drives are also faster.) You're already using the hard drive as RAM, so what's the point? Is it that big a deal to save up to a gig of hard drive paging file space by dumping it onto a perishable, slow external drive?

The only advantage I can think of is ease of expandability, since you just plug another drive in. Besides, real RAM is pretty cheap nowadays. (But you'll probably use all of it up trying to run Aero...)

bicostp: I agree about the stupidity of that feature in Vista. However it's not the flash that's the bottleneck, it's the USB/FW interface. Flash properly hooked up to an S-ATA cable is much faster than a hard drive. There are already experiments with big HD's with a solid state cache (Flash, NV-RAM or both) of 1-4 GB, which improves the access tiems enormously.

Yes yes. I doubt they mean "plug in your average leftover thumb drive" when they say Flash. The average flash memory is neither fast nor durable, but a custom drive that plugs into a modified USB slot could provide some great benefits over a hard drive when used as virtual memory.

I think that he meant people who can use any number base... in this case, you'd have to be in base 3, which is definitely not a common base to use at all, to have 10 make sense. Do I get a cookie now?
