Building an iPod from "scratch", is it worth it?

I read somewhere that to make a video on an iPod photo, just take out the audio from a video clip, and make the video clip into a bunch of photos. Load these onto the iPod. Then play the audio, and scroll through the pictures really fast. A waste of time, I'd say, but interesting, nonetheless.

One thing I don't understand is how all these ipods die, there have been like 50 threads in the past couple years dealing with parts from "dead" ipods. You could easily get parts from people right here on the forums and build one. Just start a "WTB: 4th Gen Ipod Parts" thread or something. Oh Yeah, on the newer ipods the slot where the HD goes in is just a CF slot that doesn't use all the pins.

I would advise against using ipodlinux. One of my friends put it on his iPod (4th gen) and it slowly killed his HDD (too much sustained access). He got it replaced at the Apple store (after destoying all traces of ipodlinux ) and all turned out well, but I wouldn't put it on one if I were you.
