You want a joke of english dub on an anime, try looking at Azumanga Daioh. They screwed the voice acting up so much and had such terrible voices I couldn't get past the first two episodes. That's one I'll watch only in sub.

One anime I will advocate as good on both fronts would be Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu! The voice acting and the voices are actually very good for the characters. I haven't heard the dub for Full Metal Panic! or Second Raid, but if it's like Fumoffu, they should be good.

instances where i like dub over sub are shows where i saw it dubbed first (eg trigun, outlaw star, gundam wing) so im used to the dub and those are shows where the english dub is for the most part pretty good

Hey I am completely meh I would rather have GOOD Enlish Voice acting with a true translation, But that rarely happens, I believe that the DUBs help immerse someone in the experience, but if it is terrible, then it just makes them think the other culture is ignorant,

and frankly I believe in translation that swaps the Sur-name, it is a cultural cross-oer and it needs to happen,

Also, something people do not even think about is theme songs, I mean those need SUBs since the meter is off and the song becomes totally Blah!, but I am mearly stating the obvoius there,

I personally prefer subs to dubs. Not to bash the english voice actors too much, but it's rare that I find dubs that don't sound dumb, fake, and like they're trying way too hard. However, when you find fantastic dubs such as in Howl's Moving Castle (which I watched recently) it can be a good experience.

I'm a big fan of the Naruto and Bleach series, but just about a month ago I heard the english dubs for both for the first time and it just about made me gag. Believe it! Believe it! Believe it!

Hmm, Trigun with dubs isn't too bad, and I'm kinda 50/50 on Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The story of Gundam Wing is not improved any by watching it subtitled, it still sucks. Yeah I have to agree that the voices they have for Trigun and Outlaw Star are both rather good. I've got the DVDs of the series and it's not much of a change in how the voice actors portray the character, in either language. Same goes for Gundam 08th MS Team.

Oh I have to say this for the simple fact that it's a lame attempt at doing an english dub for a couple million. The Ring, is an American version of Ringu (sp). When I watched the first few scenes of both their verbatim, but they did things like made the kid have the psychic powers well Ringu it had the father. Thus screwing up the whole movie! The reason it was done was to be like the sixth sense, which again proves that hollywood has to original idea! But that's not important now, the fact is that they tried to make an english translation of the whole movie and screwed it up, yeah.
