Me and iam7805 know a lot about SPIN (Propeller language, much alike BASIC.) If you need any help, he and I (most likely) would be willing to help.

Because I needed a theme and Bill Paxton is one of my 3 favorite actors (along with William Shatner and Will Smith)

Dammit! All my favorite actors are named William! I never realized that before...

Instead of just screaming COOL, I'll try to discuss the deisgn a bit. (Although it's undeniably cool! And what a job to solder all those LEDs)
Personally I wouldn't have chosen a mux for the job, but a shift register, like in this design: http://ucapps.de/mbhp_dout.html
The disadvantage that I see with a mux is that any single LED can only be lit for 1/8 of one line cycle. Thus the intensity goes down. However, perhaps you're feeding the diodes with a peak current 8*higher than the nominal current, yielding an rms matching the nominal current.
I'd better go make something LED-ish as well!
