The law of diminishing returns seems to take over at around the mid 60s. At that point, the amount of $ you make per round doesn't match the increase of firepower needed to make it to the next round, so you start losing citizens. And once you lose one, it's all downhill from there.
Just a tip, it's more effective to have one or two towers completely beefed up (and in a spot with good range all around) than to have a bunch of little towers.
72 is the best I've gotten. A guy at my work made it to 79. The author supposedly made it to level 90. I guess being the person that actually made the game probably helps a bit.

5'th or 6'th try. It's a fun game! (Nature towers seem to give you the most bang for the money.)

There is a secret to this...............Oh, you want to know it? Well, always place your turrets so that they fire either exactly horizontally, or exactly vertically. They fire up to 5 or 6 times quicker than otherwise. Furthermore, the "Flower" turret is less effective than a fully upgraded "Nature" turret. Both do about 9000, but the projectiles from the "Nature" turret fire and move faster and farther.

As you can see, all of my turrets are arranged to fire directly into the front of oncomming monsters.

Well the "flower" turret can be further upgraded. Something like 15,000 damage per shell on the second level! Too bad the game makes this nearly impossible with the strategies found so far.
My general strategy is to place turrets in the green areas:
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/421/strategyqo7.png
They can hit the targets for an extended period of time, since they are inside the U-turns of the path. The green area in the middle allows the shells to hit the targets a second time around. Unfortunately this strategy is somewhat difficult to get past level 68 with.
Oh, here's the latest try:

teraflop: Aw, and you were so close to beating the game author too!

Oh, right. The storm turret is the one without upgrades...
I have tried all manner of other strategies. Fully upgraded ice turrets placed in the center of the map can reach all four corners, but they just don't do enough damage. I will have to retest my strategy with upgraded flower turrets.
EDIT: The Flower turrets are useless. They start with range150, drop to 100 on second upgrade, and continue dropping. The monsters eventually run right past them. You need a weapon with decent range in order for the vertical/horizontal strategy to work.

77. Darn getting closer though.
EDIT: 81!!!!!!!!

Damn I thought this would be a killer game to use on the Wii, but it doesn't load/show the entire game. The path doesn't show up, and you can't upgrade anything. It'd be awesome if it works on the final version of the web browser, or if the guy made a Wii friendly version. With a click button to just instantly bring the next wave, instead of the space bar.
