Does the Wii EVER really turn off?

Post by benheck »

As you all know I'm working on a Wii. I have found it barely "shuts off" at all when you turn it off. Voltages are still running everywhere, and even the CPU I think!

Is this because it downloads crap even when it's "off" I wonder? I think the Wi-Fi module stays on as well.

The only time it's truly OFF is when you first plug it in and the LED is red. Any other time it's "hot" At first I thought it was just the USB rail and the +5 on the controllers but it appears to be everything. This is a bit bothersome since I need to activate the screen and new fan with the unit.

Also FYI removing the battery only seems to reset the date/time, the Mii's stay intact.

On the subject of a Wii portable, it is very unlikely anyone will beat Mii to it. ;)

Thats not good. With it always running, it will cut down on the life of the console. Imagine if PS2 was designed this way, it would burn out the laser in 6 months I'm sure. here's hoping Nintendo designed the sucker well.

Hey Ben.... Got any progress pics you might like to share? :P (worth a try)

From what I understand, it's always running unless it's not powered. When the red light is on it's in *sleep* mode, but IIRC it doesn't draw much less power then than when it's fully on. So, guess a hard switch on the power supply line is needed.

That's where you're wrong.. Mine should be done by next week... Lets hope people don't call me "Ben Heckendorn" again when I announce this!

I couldn't be bothered with a WIP, my camera batteries are dead.

Oh, and hold in the Power button and it will turn to Red LED from Orange.

I can play from around 20cm away, but it gets a bit jumpy at the moment, and like you said, the screen has to be powered on separately.. Just use a switch on the battery to turn it on and off, and leave the screen on. Problem solved. Oh and if you don't use WiFi it wont bother you as much for power consumption.

This thing may be portable, but it's not handheld...

As gannon stated, it seems like you'll just have to use a switch to cut the power from the batteries :(...

For the date and time, perhaps a decent sized watch battery connected to a certain point will keep the date/time info.
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

Shouldn't those be saved to the internal flash though? They don't need to be running.

The always on thing shouldn't be an issue. Don't you always cut off the battery to turn off power in portables?

Did he mean the button cell one or the main one? If it was the button cell, then that shouldn't be a problem, just kill the power to the Wii and keep the time.
