My XBOX is my Computer...

Well, I've been moving up my XBOX to my room, also, hoping to err...use it as my computer (and the PSONE screen as a screen...so it's discreet ). I know that I can buy some adapters to hook up mouse and keyboard, and currently I have modded my box. Basically, I want to just type on it and search the web...and possibly print. Anyone know what I should do? Also, I'd still like to play games and DVD's . Also, about the wireless Linksys gaming adapter thing...uh...can I use that to hook up to my comp's router, and still network it and surf the web, through an application?

OK, apparently, I can boot Cromwell Linux on my box...however, it may block my thing of games. I don't want that to happen. So I'm guessing that I have to reflash my XBOX chip. My idea, was to put my special 1.6b BIOS on Bank 2, and put the Cromwell Bios in Bank 1...would it work though? Nevertheless, how big is it?

First of all, I would not suggest a PSOne screen for web browsing and word processing; it's just too small. (Well, I haven't tried it, but I'd assume so.) It sounds like the apps you would want would be Firefox and OpenOffice.org. I'm fairly certain that the wireless adapter would still work, but it'd best if you got someone else to confirm.

Going about launching into Linux, you could reflash your modchip, but I'm not familiar with modchips, someone else could help you out with that. I know that one thing you can do is launch Linux through an .xbe file as opposed to a bios (This is how I do it).

Thanks but, my XBOX is 1.6b, and my option was (as said by VB) to put on GentooX on it...but since my XBOX is 1.6, the image will be distorted. All I seriously need is a text editor in which I can use a keyboard and/or mouse...

In that case, if you wanted to use Gentoox, there is a launcher called gentoox.xbe or something similar that you could launch from your dashboard and that way you wouldn't have to reflash your modchip (although that would work too).

Problem is, is that the screen appears distorted on a 1.6b...so just wondering if anyone can recommend a good XBOX text editor for me? .

I would not recommend putting Linux on one bank and putting a dashboard on the other. The main reason that there are two banks is so that you can shut off the modchip so you can play a game on xbox live or whatnot and not getting kicked off of XBL. I'd recommend setting it up so that Linux is being booted when the modchip is enabled and the standard xbox bios are being booted when the chip is disabled.

EDIT: After re-reading your first post, I can say a couple more things.

You DO NOT have to reflash your mod chip. If you can boot into Linux with the modchip enabled, then the chip is set up correctly. Personally, I would recommend that you install a dashboard [I use EvolutionX] that your xbox boots into when the chip is enabled, and then put in a path to Linux from there. This would work well because you can [A] Boot into Linux without too much hassle [B] Play your games with the chip enabled and [C] turn the chip off if you play a game on Xbox Live.

I've found that a good place to reference for anything xbox-related is www.xbox-scene.com. It might be worth it to see if anyone has a guide/tutorial of what you're trying to do. You can PM me anytime if you need to.

ok... there is 2 thinks that i can recomend to you for that 1.6

1 - for usb use this one... just $1.75 and it work great(discard that disk)

you can also buy one of those usb hub 1.1 (xbox dont suport 2.0 i think, correct me if im wrong) and have the keyboard, mouse and external hdd(or any external device) connected to the same port. thats what i do whit mine


2 - and for that stupid distortion problem... discard RGB and go whit S-Video.
that way you will get a good signal, you can use 800 x 600. I know that RGB is better than SVideo but for that model is a good option.
