Toyota is making cars that can detect how intoxicated you are. Along with that, with excessive intoxication the wont start at all untill the alcohol levels go down, or a new driver (with lower intoxication) gets in.
The roads should be safer in 10-15 years

My Auntie has a similar type of system in her old Holden, she got busted for drink driving 4 times now so she has to blow into the bretherlyzer every 5 minutes or the car completely cuts off. If she is above the limit the car wont start.Toyota is making cars that can detect how intoxicated you are. It's already in place over here in Australia.

Currently they do have something like that already. If someone has too many drunk driving tickets, but not enough to lose their license, the courts can add a device that the person is required to blow into and so have no alcohol to start the car. A mechanic my family uses for fixing cars mentoned working on one and that he had to go through a few hoops before he could disable the device and then they sent someone out to ensure it was put back and enabled properly.
Long story short, don't drink and drive!

The system is fine, so long as it can be disabled by the user. If this is not the case than we have a big problem, since it seems very likely that it will be intergrated into the car's computer in some way, and here in the US, tampering with that is a big legal no-no. That of course makes it very unlikely that the system could be removed (legally) if it can't be turned off. Now where have we seen this situation before...

if it can be easily disabled by the user then there's no point. and if they start putting 'voluntary' devices in cars, all it will take is a few years before 'the man' says we all need them. Happens all the time. (see previous airbag switch rant)
actually I've got a breathalyzer in my glovebox. (it is new orleans afterall) I have no idea if it works, my test is that if I'm dumb enough to pull it out and give it a try, maybe I should just call a cab. Damn thing only came with two tips, and they've been well used, so it's just gross now.
I'd have to be wasted to stick that in my mouth.

I'm going to say this once: The United States NEEDS this! If our citizens are too stupid to know when they can & cannot drive, then we NEED cars that will disable themselves when the driver is intoxicated! Too many people have died because of other peoples stupidity.
Does Canada need this? No. Does England need this? No. Does the US need this? Yes.

Sorry but not everyone is the kind of person that will drink and still think they can drive. With one friend of mine if he's hosting a party, like a new year's or Halloween if someone has even a single drink he takes their keys.atari2600a wrote:I'm going to say this once: The United States NEEDS this! Lets also keep in mind that it's people that drink often that think they can have a few drinks and still drive. Most people that have only a few drinks or drink alcohol it's self on a hand full of occasions year can feel the effect and know better.
I've seen both people, a person that was so inebriated that they couldn't walk a straight line and say they're going to drink, to the person that will have like a single beer (can) and not drive the whole night. I'm more the latter, though I konw I've broken the law when I've driven with enough alcohol in my system to blow almost 0.8, but one I was drive a whole 2-3 miles home, and truth be told I'd driven when far more impared (no by alcohol though).
Keep that stuff for the drinks that think that alcohol doesn't affect them like everyone else.

This seems like a crappy idea. As already stated, what if it breaks and you can't go anywhere? And what if you don't drink at all? It would be an unneeded nuisance.
The only way you could stop this is if either a) people grow brains and don't drive when they can't, or b) stop selling alcohol period (fine by me, since I don't/never will drink it).

Id support this but only for people with recorded offenses, sure it would save lives if everyone had it but it would cause too much hassle for the large majority of normal peoplevskid wrote:This seems like a crappy idea.
