sameguy wrote:Good god why do all of you want to build your dream console on your veary first try, good you can copy and paste different desighns for grafics cards and mother boards and what not, but dude do you even know what that means. Allof you are expecting a console that can compete with all the current gen consoles that are out right now, but man where do you expect the programs and the games and everything els you want, to fall from the sky. No you will have to write them yourself and this will not happen like any of the others because none of you even give the littlest glance over to the programing aspect of computers. My console that Iam making might have given the atari 2600 a run for its money but thats it, and even it has an ever growing list of problems with the things Iam wanting to add on to it. but I will get better as I go along and eventually I will aquire the knowledge that is needed to build my dream console. Now what Iwant you to do is study up on just the most basic of basic computers and find out how they work. I suggest you buy a book called "The Black Art of Video Game Console desighn"it is a good read of about 950 pages but it will tell you everything you need to know to start, take my advise and start off small or you wont even end up starting at all
That post was barely coherent. Try using more punctuation, then try separating that post into multiple paragraphs. A spell checker wouldn't hurt either.

Normally I don't pick apart peoples posts like this, but I kinda actually wanted to understand what you were trying to say. This was difficult to do with that kind of grammar, making your post quite pointless... You don't want your posts to be pointless, do you?
Lol, owned. good luck on your console/htpc/whatever Unidentified Assilant.
Thankyou lol, the reason i'm building it as it is? Because they are the parts I have. Techincally it's not a console/htpc, but rather just a pc that's for playing games with a frontend or something, it might have WinXP & Ubuntu Linux, not sure yet.

Sameguy: Um, no, I am not trying to compete with Xbox 360/Gaystation 3 or Wii ok? I am basically building a PC, with Ubuntu Linux and possibly Windows XP, since it is for gaming, maybe with a custom menu and i'm learning programming now, it's a PC, disguised a console really, and i'm playing PC games on it such as Red Alert 2, Unreal Tournament (the first one), Quake 3 Arena etc.

HTPC stands for "Home Theater PC." It's just a computer built/used for the sole purpose of hooking up to your home stereo and/or tv and playing music, and videos... sometimes games too. Some people go really into it and install some kind of PVR software such as MythTV, and then install one or more TV tuner cards in it... which is supposed to be awesome! :P I'd love to do this if I had the money...

Sorry if this is hijacking the thread, but how about this case? I like the size and the fact that it takes normal STX components instead of expensive "small form factor" parts.

(Don't post "ZomG tigrdirect sux dood go with newegg", because Newegg didn't have anything good, case-wise.)

Me and my highly evolvified brain just dragged the tv over to the computer so I can watch both without getting up

In all seriousness though, I may wind up building one eventually if my DVD recorder dies (it turns out the model I have isn't terribley reliable).

As a side note, I would recomend checking out the mini-DVR's (one of which runs Linux and is targeted at the open dev community) offered by a company called Neuros, and have recieved almost universally positive reviews. They cost around USD 120 - 250, and may suit some people's media needs better than a HTPC.

I'm suprised that nobody has mentioned XBMC. It is fairly easy to get working correctly (and many people can help you with it). It can play ANYTHING you throw at it with no trouble. It supports Samba, which is incredibly useful. It's also free (if you have an Xbox).
