PS2 upgrades

Alright I want to start doing some ps2 moding and I was wondering if the DVD drive in the PS2 was IDE format, If so I thought I could pop one of these in there

This would help with load times and may prevent some of the wearing issues form the ps2's "flipping" laser, Of course I plan on using the earliest NTSC PS2

After that I am thinking of getting a harddrive, and the network adapter

Any suggestions here (harddrive wise)

Then I may add a Mod-chip (Infinity green-dot) for homebrew

This will also cover, BACK-ups (really back-ups) and regional stuff

With this said, does anyone know of other mods that maybe interesting? Such as OC, or anything of taht nature?

I really want to compile a list of mods before I do ANYTHING, I may even get a PS3 for "Player insurance" (when the price drops, and I think it will since all the stores are like piling up their PS3's)

1) the ps2 has a laser that literally flips whenever you want to switch disc formats, tis is why they have a pre-mature demise for some users, I think it has to deal with playing DVD movies or something,

2)Not IDE huh? I googled it and couldn't find antying, so what format is it? and does SONY make anything else similar for I don't know a VAIO or something?

Maybe you could just take the laser from a PC DVD drive and solder it in.

The drive's hardware is part of the motherboard, the motherboard connects to the laser and the drive motors. It is a completely integrated drive system. I suppose that theoretically it could run internally on an IDE like bus, but there is no external connector for it. If that were the case, It might be possible, through some heavy soldering, to get an IDE drive to interface with the PS2, but I doubt it.

Well as long as you don't get a western digital hard drive you should be good in that department. You can use Western Digital HDDs, but the plugs in the back are spaced wider than average HDDs, so the Network adapter won't be able to reach unless you cut away some of the metal and force it in. That is what I had to do, and it works, it just requires more work. Any Maxtor HDD will slide right in though..

The PS2 drive uses a serial interface, which can be converted to IDE to be used on a computer. I've never heard of IDE to serial converters though.

and I think I will just get the hddadvanced, or a maxtor, I <3 MAXTOR

know about some decent hardware mods that improve performance, like an OC or the like?

I don't think you understood what I meant. It uses a serial interface, not a SATA interface. They don't really make any drives with a similar interface.
