Tiny XP

I'm wondering who's tried out Tiny Xp. I have both revision 3 and 5. I'm wondering if these still have everything for making Windows usable but cuts the crap, because I have 512MB ram and my system is still using paging often.

To explain, I use/am going to use it for VB programing, watching videos, surfing the internet, using bittorrent, iTunes, and other things like that.

P.S. Don't ask where to find it.

I haven't used it myself but I've used nLite and 98lite before that. Really sped things up on my slower PC. I only have 384mb RAM on my main XP pc yet it runs fine.

The good thing about nLite is that it's legal, because it basically re-uses files from your Windows install CD.

Yeah I've also obtained and know about XPlite. I haven't check it out yet. But really I'm not sure about it. Reason being that I'm not sure if I can put things back in the system that I might have removed, if I need them later down the road. At least with a package that is limited I can't be angry about limitations because I know about them already.

Im now interested in getting a program like that. What exactly are programs like XPLite used for?

pretty sure you can put stuff back on, i have a 98lite disc around here somewhere that im gonna use to install 98lite on my GCTP instead of DSL

Think 98lite would work on my laptop? My older one is only 166MHz P1, 48MB ram and something like 2GB HDD.

But back to the point. XPlite is a program for cutting the fat out of XP. We all know Microsoft doesn't let you pick and choose what is installed. So XPlite lets you do that, remove things you don't need and more importantly things that can be a security risk. Programs like Outlook, IE, MSN, processes you never use but are for some reason running (I'm looking at you error report).

This is really getting me to consider running XPlite. I'll way to read what else there might be said though.

I've used nLite before. I made a nice setup of Windows, just got rid of all the crap no-one would ever use (ie: IE) And it also let you instal some "Hacks" Pretty awesome.

And 98lite should work on that computer, the full version runs on just a slightly better computer than that for my dad.

I have a copy of XPlite. It can re-install components you removed in case you need them later. (I used to to pull tons of junk out of my slow-as-molasses media PC, but later used it to reinstall IE.

98Lite works best when you have a copy of pre-IE Windows 95 lying around, or can otherwise acquire a copy, because it can replace the IE-based Windows Explorer with the older 95 shell, which is smaller and faster. If you go through the drive and remove even more files, like unused drivers, you can really get 98 down pretty small. (My record is about 18 megs, but the 98lite website says it can go down to under 5.)

Thanks Bicostp. I guess I can confidently go an screw up my laptop now.

Oh and the deal about possibly getting Windows 98 down to under 5MB. Only way you could do that I see is if you made 98 about as functional as 3.1. And we all know how useful 3.1 was when you already knew how to use DOS.

This is kind of a stupid question. If I use nLite to slim XP, can I install it over my existing install and keep all my settings and programs? I'm only asking because it said something about it in the things you can remove with nLite.

Any program out there to strip an XP install down to 'tiny' format? I run a 1.6GB install on one of my machines, but since space is an issue I'd like it trimmed more.

Ditto on Gannons request, as windows seems to use about 600mb of my ram when idle :S

Erm, TinyXP rev. 5 uses like 43.5MB.
