SNES to PC adapter

Post by benol »

If I made a SNES cart to PC adapter that works through USB, would My computer recognise it as a removable drive? and if it wouldn't could I possibly make it do so? I kinda want to make my own ROMs for my private use.
PM me for DS friend codes. PLEASE!

Nope, it's not that easy. I don't know how... but that would NOT work.

What's wrong with building a SNES to parallel adapter? Ther's already a bunch of drivers out there for them...

You could still use a USB-Parallel adapter if you wanted to. (You'd need a USB encoder anyways.)

Did I say that? No. I said that just doing that would not work, it's possible to do that for parralel, but not USB.

Sounds like what Kevin Horton made using a PC. If you look at the page it's on you could likely figure out the means at which games are sent to the NES and see about transforming that in a way to have the concept work with a SNES. Of course this is so you can play roms on the SNES off the PC to the SNES, not really play a an SNES game on the PC.

Or if what you want is the old SNES controller to play games on the PC. Check out RetroUSB, they have what you might want.

Agreed. The tototek cart is pretty amazing for the money. It would almost cost you the same to build your own.

Now, there is another option. If you REALLY plan on making your own games (and not just running roms like most people who buy flash carts), then you can get a working setup for cheaper.

You simply need to get a common cart such as Super Mario World, Street Fighter II original, etc. Something with a small rom size (under 2MB). These carts are very basic, and only consist of a region chip and Eprom. You can then unsolder the Eprom, and replace it with a socket. You will need to cut and rewire a few of the traces, since the Nintendo eproms are not 100% pin compatible with normal ones. Next step, buy a 1MB flash chip, and a cheap eprom programmer such as the Willem (around $40 on ebay last i checked).
A 1MB flashrom will give you all the room you need for homebrew. Best bet to get started as cheap as possible.

Believe it or not, it's harder to copy snes games to the computer than to copy roms to a cart.

Each depends on if you have the right hardware ;)

You can either buy/build yourself an EEPROM programmer and dump the ROMs on the cart with it, or get a SNES copier like the Game Doctor SF7 or the Super Wildcard. They're rare, not to mention very expensive.

Somewhat difficult because of the amount of mappers and the detection of such.
There are some other SNES cart dumpers made though, but require on OS code for doing the actual dumping/mapper detection.
