Adding Subitiles to a .AVI file

I have googled but I cant understand how to do it. How do I add a .srt file (subtitle) to a .avi before I convert it to a DVD image?

Use virtualdubmod with the vobsob plugin (for permanent)...

Or, you could always acquire ($$) a program like DVDLab Pro and insert DVD subtitles (ones you can switch on and off).
OR
Use the freeware program DVD2SVCD (a program which incorporates multiple freeware programs into a tidy little gui) for your imaging and use it to insert subtitles (permanent or switchable).

Don't mean to hijack a thread but I've often wondered about a similar question and maybe some one here knows. is there a way to make those subtitle companion files for a pre-existing divx rip?. I've got some videos that only need subtitles in certain parts, not the whole video (like when there are foreigners talking, while most of the time it is english-speaking characters). Is there a program to make my own subtitle file without going in and completely re-converting the video itself?

Though, you could always just open up notepad, put in the subtitles, and save it as "filename.srt" with "All Files" selected on the drop down menu.

By the way, to get time measurements accurate to 1/1000 of a second use VirtualDubMod.
