5mm white LEDsfor PSone screen: Okay or not?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

5mm white LEDsfor PSone screen: Okay or not?

Post by enjoiful »

I bought some 5mm LEDs from radio shack becuase they didn't carry the 3mm size. Has anyone had experience using 5mm, and if so, was there any complications resulting from this usage?

If you plan to use those, you will have to sand them down a LOT to fit. Whereas 3MM already fit perfectly. save yourself some trouble, return the highly overpriced 5MM LED's, and buy some 3MM ones on ebay for $5 (usually that will get you at least 20!).

If you have the time, go to sunled.com & order some free samples, they'll send you some in a month or two.

3mm + wires (parallel) just barely fits so I don't think it would be wise to try 5mm leds.

I'd take those LEDs back and order some 3mm's. Also, if you're really set on doing the LED mod, make sure you get some 3mm Super Brights, as seen here. If you don't, you'll notice that the screen will actually be incredibly dark, and have a small viewing angle. The super brights will ensure that your screen's quality is about the same as it was before you removed the backlight.

Good luck!

Or, get a souped up battery and screw all led modding needs!

I thought about this before, but it probably won't fit in the light box too well. Go to mouser.com and order some. they have the fastest shipping ever, I noticed when I ordered some(1-2 days)
