OMG I got a PS3!

Post by sgtpepper »

So my dad and I were just at Best Buy and I was playing the Guitar Hero 2 demo while my dad was watching. Then this employee walks by with two PS3's and my dad asks him if they were for sale, I think you can guess the rest!

So I've got a couple questions about this new-fangled PS3, hopefully someone here will have some input!

I've heard that the PS3 will only output a Blu-ray disc in 480p or 1080p, but not 720p! I've got a Sanyo projector that outputs 720p and 1080i, but not 1080p. So I'm just trying to figure out whether it is worth it for me to even buy Blu-ray videos...

Also, I'm wondering if anyone knows how the backwards compatibility is on these, because I haven't been able to get a solid answer. :?

Those are the only two questions I have, but I bet I'll have more when I actually get to open it...

Thanks!

Yes! And since you seem to be interested in buying one, they are much cheaper on Ebay nowadays, around retail price!

I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and they had 2 of the 60GB edition sitting behind the glass. Apparently they may be starting to get their production issues sorted out. On a sidenote I saw somebody returning a 20GB model at Best Buy an hour or so before (I think it was defective since I saw the guy holding the replacement plan book in his hand).

Nobody seemed to be taking notice of the 2 at Wal-Mart so I checked eBay quick on my new phone and found that they're selling on there for about what they're selling for in store these days. Otherwise I would have snapped one up taken it home and thrown a buy-it-now on it. :D

I'm just glad there are no games for it that I care to play at the moment, otherwise I would be $600+ poorer now.

Hopefully your Dad picked up Resistance since it sounds like that is the game to play on the PS3 at the moment. :)

I'm sure that Blue-ray discs are capable of outputting 720p. It's probably just in the settings somewhere.

On a side note, congrats! They seem like a good console as of yet especially with Resistance fall of man.

That's what I'm hoping, but according to Sony-
"Video output in HD requires cables and an HD-compatible display, both sold separately. Copy-protected Blu-ray video discs can only output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP standard. HDMI cable not included. Additional equipment may be required to use the HDMI connector."
So if that's true, does anyone know of a down-converter to 720p, or if that's even possible while retaining quality? So much for getting a Blu-ray player $400 cheaper... :?

I'm kinda hesitant to on the internal drive, but I will try it out if it can boot off of an external drive. (I'm downloading Yellow Dog as of last night)

I think that what they are saying here is that the only way to display 1080p out of the PS3 is to hook it up via the HDMI connector. If you want to display at other resolutions you can use the regular cables that come with the system. This is my take, based on the syntax of the "can only output at 1080p using an HDMI cable" statement.

Ok I just managed to get myself off of the PS3 to give my dad a turn and for me to go take a shower... And I have to say the PS3 is AMAZING! I've got it running at 720p and the gameplay in Resistance looks as amazing as the cutscenes. I also have a flight simulator game (don't remember what it's called  ) that utilizes the motion sensors in the controllers. The motion sensing is not as fine-tuned and well-utilized as the Wiimote's, but it is still quite responsive and definitely adds to gameplay. I've barely even taken in everything yet, but if you guys have any questions, I'll try and answer them!
