Linksys and Netgear units are pretty good. (I think Linksys is basically owned by Cisco now, and they make some great stuff.)
Really, unless it's absolutely necessary, I wouldn't get WiFi. It's just another way to break into your machine. (Like Bluetooth.) Make sure you set the encryption codes, and don't accept the default names.

I'm using a U.S. Robotics Wireless router. It's not bad very easy to use and setup. The package came with a free PCMCIA card for laptops that may not have a builtin one. And so you know it offers WAP2 security, and suggests you use it by default.
I believe the whole thing costed about $40-60 and this was over a year ago. You can probibly get the same or simalar for closer to $30 now and this time of year is prime to look for one.

I am a geek.
Hasn't linksys always been a division of cisco? That's what I thought. Either way, linksys routers are always the highest of quality, I'd stay away from D-link, I had three different routers, all broke within months and they refused to offer support. One was supposed to have an update so it would support WAP (it said it had it on the box), but the update apparantly isn't on their website and it has been removed from their database, according to tech support. </tangent> Yeah, sorry 'bout that. Anywho:
Linksys=#1
Netgear=Good
Dlink=NOOOO!!!!
Belkin=Ok, not the best, not the worst.
Anything else=Not sure

Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

like everybody with a wireless network, I have 2 routers. I learned my lesson. don't expect reliability at anything less than commercial-grade access point. I don't know why, but that d-link never worked right to start with (kept having to reset it), and my linksys (which worked fine) now randomly stops transmitting every few hours. I got less than 6 months on the wrt54g before it started doing this. I even tried firmware upgrade, but it seems to be a hardware issue.
if all you're doing is ds it's great, but don't base your home network around wireless. it will just leave you poor. you could probably get off a little cheaper with a wireless bridge into your current network.

Agreed. I've got this router, and it's served me well. Definitely the best router purchase possible IMO.marshallh wrote:Stay away form Belkin, SMC, and D-Link.
I would suggest a Linksys WRT54G. They are almost everywhere, they're about $50 and offer a lot of bang for the buck. You can even install Linux on it and hack it to your heart's content.

i have a netgear one. dont know the exact model but its a huge piece of crap. that said, it still rarely drops my connection. im also the only person on it.
i think what reaperman said is true - you can probably find at least one person with a horror story about every home wireless router out there. in general they all stink pretty bad. my friends had a similar linksys one (b version though), didnt work well at all.

I have that one, it works OK-ish, but my range findings are pretty useless, since my mom likes to stick the router behind potted plants and such.vb_master wrote:WRT54G
And it's been said before but let me reiterate, don't expect WiFi to replace a wired network, been there, done that, was better off running back and forth with a USB thumb drive most of the time.
