N64p Project (general guidlines)

Hi, I'm new here. Okay I got that out of the way, now my question...

I'm currently building a SNES Portable using Ben's book, but I'm not using a Mini SNES. I want my next project to be the N64. I know enough on how to hook the N64 to the PSone screen and I am smart enough (I think...) to hook up the controller and build a case. What I want to know is how to power the thing with batteries, and how to properly cool the system. I have Harshboy's Complete N64 Wiring Diagram. Is this all I need to wire the thing? Do you have any tips on this project?

I used small (I guess around 1.5" x 2" x 1cm) heatsinks and a small 3cm fan and it keeps it plenty cool.

Okay I finally got a N64.

I took it all apart figured out how I want my case and everything seems to be going smooth

. But... I'm a little confused on the controller. Do I just solder a wire to the chip that corresponds to the button I want and then connect the other end of the button to a ground somewhere. I mean, I'll hook a wire to the chip pin that's the A button. Then hook the other end to my button. Then on the other end of my button I'll hook the wire to the ground of the controller. Will that work?

that will work but you will need a very good soldering iron with a very narrow tip...not my $10 radioshack special

There are little pads on the traces that correspond with the buttons, you could solder to those and then hot glue the wires down (that is what I did)

Yeah that's basicly what I did. Except I scraped them, and used my $10 radio shack soldering iron. Boy was that hard

. I'm going to use 4 dark purple SNES buttons, the A and B button from a Gamecube controller, and the D pad from a SNES Controller. Then I have to paint them

Um... about the heat sinks and fan. Can you give me a part number for the company Mouser? I am completely lost on this, thanks.

PS. I'm having trouble finding the Texas Instruments pth08000. Should I use the PT78HT233 DC/DC Converter? If so what kind of inducter do I need?

Oops... got another question. I recently seen at a Store a PS2 screen. Does anybody know if that screen will work?

look on page 1612 of the mouser catalog.

567-625-25ABT4 is good, and is 1/4" tall
567-658-XXAB where XX is a number. almost the same thing that is 0.XX" tall

you should probably get something thats at least .35" tall. but if you're real tight on space, well. it probably wouldn't break with a smaller one.

you will probably need some heatsink epoxy from somewhere (or make your own)

did you try for free samples?

ps2 screen would work. some are the same as the psone screen i think

Any small sized inductor works, really.

Personally I can't recommend the PT78HT233, because the PTH08000 and PTH08080 are much better.

Screen Question

Umm... What was the brand? Was it a 5" screen, a 5.4" screen, 7" screen or a 2.6" screen?

All of them will most likely work, but the one's most supported and used by everyone here is the 5" screen, which is a Zenith screen, a replica of the original PSOne screen. The other screen widely used is the 2.6" screen, which is either the Intec PS2 Screen Pad or the Hip Gear Screen Pad.

If you could give more details, it'd be great.

Mouser Parts

Buy 3 of these heat sinks: Mouser Part #567-D10850-40
Buy 1 or 2 of these fans: Mouser Part #670-OD402012HS

Replace the current heat spreaders on the mobo with the new heat sinks.

The fan I linked you to operates from 7 to 14 volts, so if you use a 7.2/8.4 volt battery, you should be good to go.

I really mean it. The Screen was 5.4 inches. What I really want to know is if the power consumption is too much. If it is too big. If I can modify it just like the PSone screen. etc. You know just the pros and cons.

Oh yah, I took off the reset button. Do I need to reconnect anything? Will it still work without it?

You took of the reset button to the N64? It should still work as long as you didn't rip it off, contrasted to the usual de-soldering it off.

I've never seen that screen put to use, but it should work. I don't think the power consumption should breach an ampere, but I'd take a meter to it if I were you. The only cons, it seems, are the actually qualities of the LCD. I've heard it's a bit blurry, if it's anything like the Intec Gamecube screen.

In my opinion, I'd spring for a regular PSOne screen.

I desoldered the Reset button then pried it off with a screwdriver. Hope that's okay

By the way,The case for my design right now looks like it's going to be 10" wide, 8 or 7" tall, and 2" thick. Does that sound to big?

No, that's perfectly sized. I'd actually make it 11"x7"x2", if I were you.
