word-of-mouth gaming and Mazes of Fate

Post by Reaperman@home »

this thread is being posted to try and get the word out about a GBA game titled Mazes of Fate, but to keep it discussable, I think it should be opened to all similar gaming experiences. So please don't feel limited in terms of sharing other titles that have been or are in a similar position.
--------------
Mazes of Fate is a very recent title developed by Sabarasa Entertainment out of Argentina of all places. It's their first GBA title (they usually do mobile phone games) and it's brilliant in pretty much every way. This dungeon crawler is, in my opinion, both one of the best RPGs on GBA, and one of the best crawlers ever made in general. Though I'm only 13 hrs in, the storyline is really shaping up. This is a very polished game, it in no way feels like something that you'd expect from a small shop in south america. The problem is that very few will ever play it.

They're an unknown developer who wound up with a very small publisher, and it's a very bad time to release a GBA game even under the best of conditions. Gamestop/eb turned them down flat, and they haven't managed to get their game onto a single shelf worldwide. Copies of the game were sent to all major gaming media outlets, but so far nobody has put out a review. Right now, this game is relying entirely on word-of-mouth to sell.

Currently the game is only available on ebay and amazon. I've been watching the ebay quantity, and it looks like it's only sold about 25. So give the game a try. It makes a great stocking stuffer. And if you've got a friend into dungeon crawlers, pass a link over. For collectors, I also suspect that the retail version of this game may become valuable if the rom ever becomes a cult hit. (what little popularity it does have is due entirely to the 0-day gba crowd)

Preproduction work on a DS sequel has also begun.

Looks good! It's sad such a good game has to die of such a meaningless death...

I just might be part of that whole 0-day gba crowd that likes it so much. It's easier to enjoy a "backup" that you "found" when it's got a big name on its box and is sure to sell 200,000 copies, but when such a great title is only selling 25, it's a little harder. not really guilt, but more a feeling of obligation to help such a solid little title fly.

But I have purchased the game. (granted it hasn't arrived yet)

they're really hurting for reviews. today over on the game's forum they called for user reviews at IGN and Gamespot. I may do one once I finish it. I'm 16 hours in now, and am about to start another boring nightshift.
