doomportables needs a temporary admin!

Post by abbibi »

Hello, everyone. Abbibi here. As you might have noticed, I haven't been updating my site. I am in the process of getting out of the military, and it's like trying to switch citizenships. This will be keeping me occupied until at least the middle of September, and probably later by the looks of things. I still need to move, find a place to live, start college up again, and get a job. Then I have to get used to it enough to gain enough free time to devote a reasonable amount of time to this doomportables. Including, but not limited to, finishing the new, snazzy, PHP look. Unfortunately, because of the way my PHP site works, I can't add it to the site until it's almost completely finished. But I don't want my site rendered useless because it's not updated in the meantime.

If you are interested in updating doomportables until I can return, please let me know. You must be someone who's been around for a while that I can trust with the admin password, and you must be VERY familiar with HTML. And obiously, you need to still be fairly active.

Email me or post here if you're interested.

I guess I could do it, but managing 2 sites at once might be a little hard.

I was excited for a PHP book to come along at the library, then I got all confused with the MySQL stuff pretty much right away, and the book had to be returned

I'm sorry Abbibi! I have failed you!

I do know a fair amount of HTML, maybe if you want to get a couple of people and have co-temporary administrators or something, I could do that. Is the site programmed in HTML or PHP at the moment? If it's HTML, I'd be happy to help out.

Either way, it's good to see your brain didn't explode or anything

It tried to, but I wasn't able to get enough alcohol in my system to ignite it.

Don't think you failed me, I failed myself. What little free time I have now is devoted to my Zodiac and GP32.

And not even including outprocessing the military as a factor in my absence, I started having a sleeping disorder around the new year. If I'm not actually sleeping, I usually feel like I'm going to pass out any second (you don't even want to know how long it took me to write this far). That's what I get for being on shift work for three years...

Anyways, I would love to allow multiple admins, but my account only allows one login and password. Whoever I choose to take over for a while could change the password and lock me out from my own site! So you understand if I'm only willing to risk this with one person at a time. In fact this is one of the things that will be fixed with the PHP site I'm setting up. MySQL allows for multiple account layers, similar (actually, exactly the same) to a message board.

The site is still in HTML. I am working on the new site offline, because it will be full of security leaks until it is finished. But for now, I need someone who is really versed in HTML, because I haven't included any explanations is the site's code, and it's quite a mess right now. I know gannon could do it, but like he said, it would be difficult for him to manage two sites at once. I think you would be a good choice, SpongeBuell, but I'm not sure you could handle it. No offence, but I used quite a few tricks in the HTML coding, and you'd have to be one the ball to figure it out. Try modifying some of the source code on my site and emailing me the modified HTML documents (you know, add an update, change the sidebar, and say add some more images to the concepts page). If the code looks good, you can have the job. This goes for anyone else out this too...

Though I'm not a good candidate for admin (and wouldn't even volunteer, since you barely know me) I do think I could lend a hand with PHP and MySQL, if you actually want some help on that part. I've been constructing a new site myself with the two, and know enough to get a decent site working...

If you're interested, just send me an e-mail.

I could do it, I've been on Ben's Sites for some months, but I haven't talked to you, I mean, you don't know me, but I know a lot of HTML, and also I can do something on Javascript, but I don't know about PHP or MySQL (still I know some SQL commands), and I check the Internet almost every day (actually night :) ), and your site is great and if you won't be able to update I think I can help you, but again...you don´t know me.

But if you think I'm a good candidate let me know.

If their could be Co-temp-admins I could do it, well I could do it. But my job takes up about 12 hours a day, and about 10 hrs of my other time is spent online. Sleep is for the weak, or tired. I do know HTML rather well. And I am in the LPC, though I dont think my pic is gonna help my case at all. If you need an example you can visit the site for my NES emulator MarioNES. That should give you an idea of my capabilities. I can do it, and I am willing to do it. But if there is someone more qualified, by all means let them do it.

p.s.
I have been on the forums and stuff for about 2 years, I just havent completed any project yet. Nor have I gotten pictures to prove it. well I do, but they were taken with my crappy webcam, ill post em if I find them.

To start, no offense taken whatsoever. In fact, I'm honored that you seem to trust me to do it if my HTML is good enough. I'll try to make an update (I'll start with that battery thing I sent you a while back) on the main site and put it where it belongs. If I do need help, a guy at work is a web designer (I work at a company that makes software) that would probably be willing to give me a few hints if I'm stumped. Also, if I have a site to start with, that would be a lot easier for me since I can use something else as a "template." For example, I would take a previous update, copy it, change the date and content, change or remove the picture address, and post. That way, the size, font, and pretty much anything else would remain consistent.

I'll work on it and give you the result when I can, as well as the approximate time it took.

As a 2000th post on the boards, I'll say that I just sent my test site to Abbibi, since I finished it after you volunteered, and I guess it's his choice. May the better man win :D

Either way, I put a good word in for you, NiN^_^NiN.

Edit: Crap, gannon put something up before me, so that's post #2001

*idea*

Abbibi: maybe me, Nin, and gannon (if he's interested) all do updates, but only one has the password and does the loading?

Okay guys, both Spongebuell and gannon have sent me modified versions of some of my site pages, and gannon definitely has the upper hand here. Spongebuell, I don't know what you used to modify the HTML code, but it replaced the "style" command with the phrase "cleaned_tag". gannon also took the time to clean up my messy code. Here are the names and number of posts of everyone who offered to take the job:

gannon: 381; Spongebuell: 152, NiN^_^NiN: 11, Geebs61:15; NeoGoldenBoy: 15, cennar: 119

gannon is definitely a consideration, the only problem being that he'll be updating two portable sites, and I know from experience that one is more than enough. Spongebuell is also a consideration, even though he's still learning HTML, I was too when I started the site. I know NiN^_^NiN could do it, but he really isn't that active anymore (I have no problem with that, but I want someone who will update more often than I do). I know Geebs61, he's been around for a while, and he obviously can handle HTML (though it doesn't look like he codes his site by hand), but he isn't very active either. And I don't know NeoGoldenBoy or cennar. In the interest of fair play, could the others vouch for them? I'd like to give everyone who's interested a fair chance.

Those of you that haven't sent me a modifed version of my site, please do so for me to consider you (yes, even you, NiN^_^NiN  ). Spongebuell, send me a file with the error I spoke of fixed. Also, check out webmonkey.com, it is goodness. And if you are interested in a good HTML reference book, I referred to "HTML in a Nutshell" for the majority of my coding. So you know what I'm looking for, this is the modified page gannon sent me: http://www.gannon.tk/testing.html He added a link in the sidebar and an update.
