YDL or Fedora 5 on PS3

Post by A_Username »

What do you think?? I've heard that they made a special version of Yellow Dog Linux just for the PS3 that will have access to all of the processors. YDL will also have sound. Haven't heard much about the install of Fedora 5 on the PS3. What sucks though, every hard disk user's nightmare, PARTITIONING!!

Yep, the only reason I'd get a ps3 is to use it as a pc (and even then, I'd have to give it a new case :P)
YDL for it is $50 IIRC, but since it's designed towards it I'd hope that it'd perform better than others.

whoa that is AWESOME!

Now I have to learn Linux...and get a PS3
And well the Partitioning thing sounds...well...very difficult
But also could there could also be some additional hardrives added? Kinda like the original XBOX?

But with all these mods being presented, someone has to experiment...

I believe - but can't confirm - that PS3 Linux distros won't be able to put the RSX (video card) to good use. I think even Doom requires a good framebuffer...

Yeah, the whole thing is slow as molasses, and to boot, it only has 256 ram.

The main thing that I like (about the CPU itself, hell, a PC built with one would be great) is that it alone can do 205000 MIPS (although only 6/8s of this speed is obtainable by the PS3 since it's missing one SPE and one is locked for 'OS Security').
Looks like it'd take over 3 Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 CPUs to match that. Although it'd be interesting to see real world application based benchmarking between the 2

I'm waiting for someone to hack XP/Vista/OsX onto it, then maybe i'll get one as a cheap super-computer thing. I finally have enough money to buy one.
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.
