i am trying to make some copies of games i lost a while ago, and i need some help.
i've got a ".cdi" file and alcohol 120%
i tried burning it to a plan cd with alcohol120% and it did not work in my DC would anyone be able to post something to help me out?
You positive you have a version 0 or 1 model? Also I've do this before, download cdi2nero, and use Nero to burn the images. I found this a hell of a lot easier to do then figure out how DiscJuggler. You can simply do a google search to find cdi2nero if you want to use it.

I second using Nero, much more user-friendly for ISOs and ROMs and such. Although I can't speak from the other side (Alcohol 120%) I can say that I do really like Nero. Good luck!

will i need a boot disc? or will i be able to just throw them in the DC and play after they are burnt
EDIT: and i'm sure i have the right model because awhile back my brothers friend gave me backed up copies of tony hawks pro skater and capcom vs. snk
You shouldn't, if the file mentions that it's a self-booting, and most are.

Standard CD-Rs. I've used both Sony and Verbatum and haven't had a problem. One side note you need to know is dummy files, many people say you should have a dummy file put in to smaller files to push all the readable information to the outside of the disc. This is suppost to keep the GD-ROM from burnning out or wearing out faster. I don't know how to do this, you'll have to ask someone else, I've only heard and I personally don't play my Dreamcast enough to care.

i'm running into one problem now, soul calibur is to big to fit on my cd-r does that mean i'm gonna have to use a dvd-r or is there a "dummy file" on it that i can get rid of
Well, after losing about 25 cd-r, I now have the PERFECT setting for Disc Juggler. This method work with all my self bootable cdi. Anyway, I have disc juggler 4.6 I think.
Until i figured it out i made about 10 coasters maybe 15. I have nero and diskjuggler. I only use DJ for DC games and nero for everything else. I have also used sony and verbatim disks. If you want some good links for homebrew images PM me.
