A Christmas dilemma

Post by Motoman »

Oh man, for Christmas my parents have agreed that I can get one expensive gift but the problem is which damn one!!! Here's what I've narrowed it down to:

Microsoft Zune: I dont know why but I really want to like it
Nintendo Wii: I love her, I need her, I bleed her, but with school I dont have a lot of time for video games
Ipod 30gb: Same as Zune except I like the Ipod less.
Iriver Clix: Kicks ass but has a small capacity

-I travel a lot
-Love video games, but dont have a lot of free time
-Happy Holidays!

If you think theres something lacking on my list that I should take a look at please feel free to suggest anything

Microsoft Zune: NO! NO NO NO! I've heard nothing but piss-poor reviews about that thing. (At IT places, not random personal "zomgggg i want it sew bad!!!1!" places.) The only good thing I've heard about it is its shiny graphics. Other than that it's a piece of turd. (It's even the right color!)

Nintendo Wii: Get it if you want it. Personally I don't think it's worth the price, but it's up to you.

Ipod 30gb: No, it's not the same as the Zune. It's smaller, the interface is more intuitive, and it has a better music store system. Get an iPod or a Creative Zen if you want a portable MP3 player. (Better yet a portable CD player that plays MP3s.)

Iriver Clix: I haven't heard of it, so I looked it up. It doesn't really seem all that impressive. :|

If you want my opinion, ask for a an official Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and a thing tells time. Just don't shoot your eye out.

Wii. MP3 players are nice (especially Zen), but you could get an MP3 CD player for $20 and then you'd still have another expensive gift to get. There's no cheap equivelent to a Wii.

I'd go with a Creative ZenTouch 40GB MP3 player. Before I had my iPod, I had one of those, but that broke. I had full warranty but STUPID Best Buy didn't carry that MP3 player anymore, so I had to get an iPod. The iPod was 10GB smaller and cost a LOT more. The only thing the iPod had for it was that it could play videos.... which doesn't impress me when the screen is that small and it has no video output. The menu systems are similar but the creative feels less cluttered and I like the buttons better.

I have a Wii and i have an ipod. I like my Wii but honestly Im not as impressed as I thought I would be. Zelda is really fun but the graphics arent that great yet. However, just like the gamecube, they will improve. As for the ipod. i have a 30 gig video. Its not for watching movies. Maybe shorts like 30 minutes. But after a while the audio doesnt match up to the video any more. I guess the Zune has its good and bad sides. I hear its no iPod killer but my friend has one and he really likes it. Also, its a bit more bulky than an iPod.

get yourself a gameboy, or a PSP, or a nice cell phone compared to what you have. and these are also cheaper than your preferences.
I personally like the backlit GBA SP, but most people don't because of its simple yet fun graphic capabilities. But the games are fun.

i bought one of the 2gb solid state mp4 players with video play back like 2 or 3 months ago.

it was like 70 bucks with shipping and all and works great.

and i vouch on the humorous manuals...

Microsoft Zune: I have read a lot of good reviews of it (from IT places), but have no firsthand experience. This is the only mp3 player that I have seen multiple "reputable" sources declare a worthy adversary to the iPod. I'd wait though, because it is first gen and will probably have some growing pains. I agree that it is intriguing, but would hold off at the present time.

Nintendo Wii: Depends what type of gaming you're into. I played one and had the chance to put in some significant (more than 5 minutes at a kiosk for sure) time playing Wii Sports, Zelda, and CoD3. I was left decidedly unimpressed. The motion control was pretty spotty. At times it worked reasonably well and at others not well at all. This has a lot to do with the games the technology is being forced into though. CoD3 was on the border of being unplayable, Zelda barely used it, and it worked its best with the bowling and tennis games in Wii Sports. I think it has potential, but as of right now it would be like setting your parents' money on fire in my opinion. Again, its first gen and will need some time to mature. So wait it out and see what happens.

Ipod 30gb: I have an iPod Nano (won it actually) and have been quite pleased with it in the year or so that it has been in my possession. It is quite easy to use and the integration with iTunes is nice as well. I haven't used the bigger 30GB iPod that you inquire about, but I imagine it works much the same. I don't use mine a lot, because I have a disc changer in my car and I can listen to music on my laptop at work, but it is great at what it does irregardless. I actually have mine hooked up to my Xbox360 95% of the time and with the "Optional iPod Support" download for the 360 it works awesome. This is where I get the most use out of it and it does quite well. Of the options you have listed this is where I feel your parents' money would be best spent.

Iriver Clix: Not familiar with it, so I will leave it up to the other forum members to give their verdicts on it.

Just my 2 cents.

I'd say get a PSP, it has gaming, music, video, and web out of the box, or at least without more hardware, as long as you have a memory stick. Thats why I got/getting one (still in the mail :( ).

Zune:No get a Creative Vision M 30GB, or a 60GB for $260

Wii: If you really. really want one. But good luck finding one till about January.

iPod: Don't ever get an iPod unless you you like shiny things. Shiny things that scratch, and by scratch I mean then literally become brushed metal without trying.
