or ya wind up turning from a bad one to a worse one! (head on collision or off a cliff, your choice!) engine swap wouldnt be too hard, lots of fabrication tho, harley motor would probably be way underpowered (there only around 100hp or so, low revving too) a busa engine would jack up the PWR like crazy tho! one of my many lifes goals is to but a modded out gsxr1300 hyabusa engine into a geo metro and take it to a dragstrip! drops the power to weight ratio from 30lbs/hp to 6lbs/hp! (based on stock hp and weight versus stock weight and appx 300hp)

Actually, they've been trying to bring the SMART car to the US for years and safety tests you speak of are the very reason why it had not been approved for sale until just recently. Apparently they have made improvements to the car so it now passes the test, as dealers can now sign on to be SMART car dealers and they will go on sale late next year.bicostp wrote:That's still not a whole lot for your money.
Wouldn't they have to do some serious work on the frame to make it passable in our safety tests here in the US? Such tiny things would be obiterated by the enormous land yachts they drive around here. Ever see the episode of MythBusters where they crushed a car between 2 semis? It would look something like that.
I still would not feel safe in one however. They are very small. Look at the dimensions and then compare it to even an average size car. If everybody drove Neons, Cavaliers, Corollas, etc. it wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately people drive vehicles that should almost require a CDL to drive. And they don't drive them very well.
I drive a Cadillac CTS and on more than one occasion I have almost had somebody turn into me because they couldn't see me in what would be the void they would refer to as their blind spot. And the CTS is a mid-size car! If I were driving a SMART car, they would never see me, even if I were in front of them!
It will be interesting to see how they work out over here. Hopefully the number of traffic deaths doesn't increase exponentially...
