odd things on shinobi

Post by Retromaster »

I have the revenge of shinobi on genesis and I played it about 2 years ago when the screen flickered and then on the titel screen it displayed "the super shinobi" and the picture looked wierd. Was this lost data from a SNES game remake of the game or something like that?

the super shinobi was the japanese version of the revenge of shinobi.
I'm thinking it was a glitch that allowed the asian version of the screen to display to some extent.

Cool.....how do I switch the genesis to Japanese? I'd take a picture of it and send it in to retro gamer magazine.
Isn't the Japanese genesis different from the USA version?
(Genesis...Megadrive...what's the difference?)

50/60Hz is the diff ;)

Oh and different styling

From here:
http://www.consolepassion.co.uk/modification.htm

In addition to disabling the internal regional lockout chip and adding a 50/60Hz switch as described above I can add an additional switch to your Sega Megadrive which toggles the language setting of the game being played. This can have some quite interesting effects on the games you play. This is because many of the game cartridges actual have two versions of the game - a Japanese version and an English version.

While the basic game play will remain the same, there may be some subtle differences. Characters may have different names, music may be different and even the game may have a different name (see pictures below). The same happens when you switch some Japanese cartridges to English language, which is useful if you don't speak & read Japanese! The best bit is experimenting with games - if you have this modification done and find any interesting changes why not let me know and I may compile a list of games that are affected.

If you're lucky they labeled the language jumper. I haven't opened a genesis to check.
I'm still thinking yours was a fluke with the cart inserted wrong, or rapid power cycling. something happened where the game didn't come up properly.

Further research on that game is pretty interesting. there were 3 different revisions of the cart produced, the difference were the bosses.

sorry about the music on this site,

I hate when people do that.

Now do you add the switches between 50/60 ghz by yourself or do you get it already installed or what?
maybe I can open it up and add it if I know how.

japan uses NTSC just like the USA does. so you only need 60hz
50hz is for areas that use PAL, like most of europe or australia.

besides, unless I'm missing something, that switch controls what the console outputs. you will always want it to output at 60hz unless you go crazy and decide to buy a french TV, or are visiting friends in germany and decide to take your genesis. I don't think you have to play european games in 50hz. It sounds like an excessive mod for people who want to say they have 'the ultimate'

You are missing something :)

In later years the 50Hz and 60Hz where used as a region check basiclly so for import games you need to have this switch

Hey, that happens to me too ;-). Well just buy your own Megadrive/Genesis, they're practically dirt cheap now.

Hm.........since I don't have an ebay account I better find some guy in a trench coat named steve who hangs out in some dark alley to deal it to me.....the problem is he always wants me to do odd jobs such as 'whack'
or 'bring me the good stufffffffffff......' which I fail to understand.
Where's a place that I can get a genesis? A thrift store? Area 51?
Maybe i'll find it in my worn out stocking along with 4 chunks of coal and a dead hamster....that way I can have a Bar-B-Q with the rodent and my stocking contents....It's better than rat meat.....

that's "super lame". At least it only checks region on boot, so you can switch it back to viewable. sega could have been real jerks and had it check every couple minutes or something.

at least the switch (from the ntsc point of view) is only good for importing lame euro games--most involving moving small groups of vikings through various challenges. It's much handier for people with pal consoles trying to get us/jap games flying. Still, it seems so easy, that it'd be a shame not to do the full mod. now where is my genesis box...

another oddity, according to that site you linked to pal games actually run slower than 60hz games? did sega actually screw pal users that badly? sonic must have been boring. maybe that's why the nec systems were so much more popular in pal areas.
