Wii Laptop (Wiitop?) Screen Ideas

I heard a bunch of you (Or... Ben) were looking to make a Wii Laptop. The only problem... The sensor bar. So I used my genius "haven't made a portable yet" skills to come up with an idea.

An LCD screen has a transparent part that the image appears on. My idea is to take two infrared LED's and put them directly behind the LCD, but not in front of the white thing used to reflect the backlight. This way, the IR lights can shine straight though the screen into the Wiimote's IR camera (That's how it works, FYI) and it would be super accurate at close distances, which considering the screen is small, and it's a laptop, you would be close to it. Would that work?

So now, instead of the Wiimote pointing at a bar on top of the screen, it's pointing AT the screen!

I was just thinking of putting a few IR leds on either side, above the screen corners. Why go to all the bother to put them behind the LCD glass?

Edit: even better, why not just put them on either side of the screen? They might not have to be at the top or bottom, but I don't have a Wii to test this with.

What happens when the crystals are closed for the black color, would the IR light get through completely?

One problem I have with the idea of putting the IR LEDs in the middle (vertically): The Wii only has presets for above and below the TV. So pointing at the middle, were you to have the LEDs there, would register as just the top or bottom, depending on what position setting you have it on.

It'd be infinitely easier to just have them under or over the screen.

I think he meant put the IR LED's to the left and right of the screen. Like with the screen between them
