Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD...the format war is about over...

I think it would be nice to do computer back-ups using Blu-Ray discs intead of purchasing another hard drive... Except I'd have to get a Blu-Ray burner. Bah!

Either way, I'm still blown away with the quality that the DVD format brings us. I was watching a movie on VHS that came out in the early 90's and it's amazing how much it's degraded. The 90's weren't all that long ago!

I agree with others who say anything that has a "better" picture than a plain ol' DVD is a moot point - how crisp do movies have to be?

Anyways, VSkid, slap an S-Video cable on your receiver & I'll guarantee you the difference will be amazing! (well, depending on the channel &/or service that is. some services &/or channels send over a really compressed signal.)

The key reason that they are trying to release an HD format optical disc is to keep up with the broadcast format change. As all of you know you can get HDTV channels from Satellite or Cable, and the broadcast standard is going over to HD in little more then a year. So they're trying to have a media standard that will not require the image to have to be resized and thus on an LCD become pixelated.

With DVDs I've heard that their native video quality is only ED. I personally thought that all DVDs that were at a 16:9 ratio were 720i/p video quality. Well that's besides the point, what is important is that when you compare how much broadcast HD video you can put on a DVD (dual layer) vs Blue-Ray/HD-DVD there is a very noticable difference in minutes of video.

So once the TV standard moves to HD and most/all shows are in HD they're going to want a media standard that can handle something in the way of minutes to what a DVD does with SD/ED video now. Bluntly put, does it sound reasonable that you'd want 5-9 episodes on a Blue-Ray/HD-DVD disc then have say 1-2 episodes on a DVD. And for the sack of illistration the season is 24 episodes long. What's going to be better, 12 DVDs or about 3 HD quality discs?

couldnt agree with you more. i didnt read all the posts but i didnt see the size of dvd vs blue ray. dvd is 9gb for dual layer and for blue ray its 50gb. so there is a pretty big difference in how much information you can hold on a disc.

Just to bump this and say, that in the end, both will be in the same desert as E.T. for the 2600...and a newer Higher HD disc will be available.
