To see if it will work you could always etch two boards, drill the holes and slap them together... :P But seriously, doing a dual-sided board by hand sucks big time. I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. Not saying it's impossible, but it requires a LOT of skill and planning.

yeah, my atari's chips weren't in sockets, so I bought the chips.
Also, I think you meant to press the edit, not quote button someone :)

Here's another guy that created a custom PCB for his portable Atari:

Errrr... that's not a PCB, my friend. That's a copper clad breadboard. Doesn't surprise me that Kevin Horton did that too :)

My first breadboard test didn't work out... Ug! I am cursed!

I've never wired an Atari by hand... any pointers?

build crucial components like the clock on a bread board, then cut the input lines on an atari that correspond to them. Then just connect them and if the atari runs you built that certain part of the circuit right :)

I will gladly etch a proto board or boards for Ben for free when he gets a working design. (if he wants)

I have plenty of copper clad and etchant.

Good luck Ben. I often have the same problems with my breadboard designs not working on the first shot. (I build micro-bots and BEAM bots)
You'lll get it.

I think I might jump on the band waggon and try to make one.

We just might have a horse race hear fellas.

PS
my 2 cents to add to Ben's atari board project.
Build onto the board vias to sodder in a cable that can go from the cart slot to my 512 game multi cart. I will add the same to my final cart board.
That way if you want to take both and connect them with a ribbon and put both in the portable it will be easy.

Also you will need to add the small circut for the pull-down resistor to detect a normal cart being inserted and short the 5v going to the multi cart.

Anyway it will be a great feature for anyone wanting to include onboard games even if they deside not to use my cart they can still just take apart their favorit cart and wire it in line and have an onboard game.

I did this with my 6 switch which had a socket for an onboard game but was never used. Right now Pitfall is in it but I will use it for my multi-cart when it is done.

Can we see this circut?

yeah, but that's a 4 layer board :)
Fitting it all on a 2 layer board is a bit more of a challengs :)

I wasnt saying anything about a 2/4 layer board. I was pointing out that someone has already made some PCB's. They look pretty nice too.

Well I'm not going to even think of someone prototyping a 3 lyer board. But we can atleast look at the design. It could help use find whats wrong (for Ben atleast), as I doubt they'd post thing schematics if it didnt work.
