How do you slim down the gamecube disc drive

Post by soxinrevin »

How do you slim down the gamecube disc drive to its smallest?
I am working on a Gamecube Portable and the disc drive is way to big for what i want to do, so if you can please help me.

Thanks

You could try your luck at building a Gamecube Hard drive, and use that.. It may be bigger in width, but it's potentially thinner depending on your electronics experience and hard drive of choice. Plus you wouldn't have to worry about games.. You stick them on the hard drive.

if you do a hard drive you could get a laptop drive which is next to nothing in size...

Has this ever been done, if it's just a matter of wiring i may want to try this, you would need to chip your cube also, right

IIRC a PCB design was posted on the forums for it somewhere.

you could make a pretty slick looking GCp if ben found a way to run it off of 7.2 volts and if you could use a hard drive

There's some stuff about a HDD on GC here and here.

This looks ridiculously hard to do, but someone might manage to do it.

As far as running it off of a 7.2 volt battery, couldn't you just use a dc-dc to boost the voltage to 12v to power the power supply? You might lose some efficiency there, and I'm not sure how much power GC takes.

Go to Guides and Tutorials > IDE/USB adapter. Basically all that page does is link to the other one I posted.

It's doable.. For legal reasons they never released a source for ISO loading, so this will have to be made. The chip itself would have been very costly for a company to build and sell, and difficult to code working software. I know a lot of people have tried, but not much commercialism actually came from this.... There might be a reason why, but none that I can see, since it's just drive emulation and interpretation. Drive emulation already been done through PSOload's ISO streaming, and interpretation being done in the example software on Crazynation.. There might be more to it than this though.. But it really does seem doable.
