Same happened to my elementary school in 1st grade. almost every day up until 4th grade we would still bring our gameboys and play them, they wouldnt even notice. One day, They noticed and told us if we brought them tommorow, writeups . my friend did anyway . this was in december, we went and hid under a play structure on a place across the play ground we werent supposed to go in the winter. we got so involve we didnt notice it started snowing and they brought everyone in. We went and started pounding on the doors, they opened up and gave us refferals. they also took away my friends gameboy and some yugioh cards (eventually they had yugioh tournaments) and gave us both write ups. damn recess moniters

I agree with not allowing the games - they don't have to "run around". I remember playing on the swings or building stuff with the sand when it was damp.

well I dont know about this school- but my school had a huge playground with 2 basketball hoops, a small structure, and a small set of swings on it. there was a whole part of it we couldnt use half the year, and had nothing on it. my brothers still go to the school and I know they added a lot more stuff to do.

but if theres nothing else to do, why not play gameboy?

If their game's gonna get broken or stolen, they should learn that themselves. Crazy rules like that just prevent people from learning leasons they'll need when there aren't as many rules

...Except then the parents would want to know who was responsible for taking/breaking their child's game, and demand that the school deals with the situation by requiring the guilty party's parents to replace the game as well as enforcing some other form of punishment. Or the parents could hold the school responsible for not monitoring the children if no one knows who stole/broke it, and demand that the school rectifies the situation somehow. Either situation for the school can be avoided by just not allowing them in school at all.

This rule isn't as much protection for the kids as it is protection for the school.

That's like the inverse of my school.
We're even having an all-school-all-night game-fest tomorrow night. We call it Uberfest.

Imagine the school hallways lined with TV's all playing other systems, and in some rooms, we play on 10' projector screens. Some things you're likely to hear in my school:
"In Paul's room they're using a projector for a Guitar Hero II tourney, Wanna come?"
"Who brought the N64?"
"Ray, your NES is broken!"

That last one I keep hearing because of all the noobs who don't know how to work it right and the screen starts flashing.

At our school, you really can't use Gameboys, Psp's, DS's, or whatever during school hours, that I know of. People play them after lunch, though...

During elementary we would try to sneak into places we weren't allowed and stuff like that but most of the time we would just go sit under a tree and talk about flying to mars and stuff... But the best times were after a large snowfall we would get every kid on the playground and roll giant snowballs that were bigger than most of the kids. Then we would roll them up the hill and play bowling

At my school (this is Junior High, by the way) we can bring electronics if we want to, but the school is responsible for them being stolen or damaged. The rule is that you can't use them in class, which is pretty understandable.

ok the problem with most elementary school bans is that they fear whatever they ban...

I know this sounds like shrink territory, but they fear that them not running around will cause them to focus inwards, become greedy and they fear extreme greed...

Also, they also ban things they do not understand... by this they do not understand a way to properlly ge rid of something... meaning let it run its course and keep deaths to a minimum... sure the over-emotional kid with bad parenting will be the most jealous and have tantrums and that is what they fear...

I believe the option mentioned earlier is the best...Have a game fest, this grants a time and place for games and they can manage their time accordingly, hereby they will be active in recess and then game there hearts out at the appointed time...

In short, support games, don't supress them the supression only creates a desire for a dark outlet to be created.

Banning stuff is stupid. If they ban it people will get more interested in it. They'll start doing it anyway... Just liking smoking in toilets in stuff.

Cellphone's are also prohibited in my school but everyone's using them anyway.

lol this is hilarious, out school has banned stuff like bandannas completly because they are a "gang symbol". i live in RURAL IOWA. the only gang related stuff is in ottumwa because of the massive increase in hispanic population (highest increase in the country! went up 400% and no i am not racist towards hispanics, but some of them do have gang connections , its a problem in ottumwa)and all the stupid kids who think that kind of BS is cool

From my student handbook:

17. Electronic Devices (non-academic) and Recreational Equipment: The use of radios, CD/tape players, pagers, cellular phones, skateboards, televisions, roller blades, scooters, etc. is not permitted during school unless required for a class activity. The school assumes no responsibility for the security of these items. These items will be confiscated by school staff and returned at the discretion of the administration.

It's worked since elementary school, and as long as it's not being used during class (or passing time), it's within the rules. Lunch isn't treated as a class, and we are therefore allowed to use such devices during lunch (except the transportation equipment). Since the school isn't responsible, and it is clearly stated, there have been zero parental complaints.

What the real issue is (which is being sidestepped by the ban of electronics), is bad parenting. Instead of punishing the kids for having no discretion and bringing their expensive electronics to school, the PARENTS should be punished for treating it as acceptable. Once the students are in middle/high school, and more easily able to make choices for themselves, the punishments would be for the students.

My elementary school sucked. The principal was safety paranoid, so the only playground equipment we had was a box of basketballs, a Whiffle ball and bat, a few kickballs, jump ropes and the rare, elusive Skip-It knockoff. The only other things we had were some game boundaries like 4 Square and Hopscotch painted on the pavement. No swings, no jungle gyms, hell the basketball court didn't have hoops! The other playground (for grades 4 - 6) didn't even have pavement markings! Yes. It sucked. In a big way.

However we could use Game Boys (if you were lucky enough to have one... remember I'm talking 1992-1993 here...). Electronic games like the Tiger handhelds and Game & Watches were permitted as long as the sound was off. But now the times have changed and such devices have been banned from use in school.

I'm just thankful I no longer have to deal with the public educational system. Yay graduation! (College can be a bugger, too...)
