building a ghetto blaster

During my way home one day, I got one of those connectors that hook up to a battery and output a wall plug to power something. It was most likely ran over, and the springs were missing, yet I still thought of a use for it. Tonight, after a week or so, I straped it to a D battery and hooked up my comppys speakers.... Nothing... Maybe 4 ?... Still nothing. So I decided to find some old speakers, make them run on a couple of D batterys, and build a small ghetto blaster that will hook up to a source (mp3 player).... Or mabe there is a different way of getting speakers to run on D batterys. I just want help deciding what to do. This needs to be small enough to fit in my backpack because I would like it to be portable

Big (very) radio/cassette player carried around on shoulder by so called 'cool people' in the 80's and 90's.

I want to restore it; it's kind of messed up. It works, but it looks like it's seen better days.

Joes2Silly, I bet you could apply power right onto the speaker's main board. Converting form DC to AC and back is rather... silly, don't you think?

I've hit a problem with my design for one, and I think you might have the same problem. If you are converting the tape player to hold the iPod, there isn't enough space to put the iPod and the audio jack. The only way I can think of is dremiling the side of the player out to make some extra space, but it might mess up the opening mechanism

something that might be useful to you is a casste tape that has an audio jack coming out of it that you plug into a CD player/MP3 and it plays through the tape player

my dad has one for his car which only has a tape player

I might be doing something of this sort considering I have many a lot of speakers (and headphone splitters), I have a newer sort of Boombox that plays CD's also, but it's my main audio player in my bedroom for now so it's not being gutted.
