I may intend to get an Xbox 360 within a few months, but there are some things that I still need to address. Since the 360 runs very hot, I plan to make some external cooling device, so that I don't void the warranty of the system by replacing the fans and heatsinks. Can someone tell me where the air intake is located, and in which direction each of the fans blow? Thanks.
I'm also looking to find out how I can use a different hard drive to replace the 360 one (So far, I haven't found much). I'd rather buy the core system, but $100 for a 20GB hard drive or $40 for a 64MB memory card is pathetic.

I would say just buy an Intercooler, don't bother making something. Or if you really wanted to you could do something uber-cool and water cool it a la Xbox 360 laptop.
Seriously though, several of my friends with 360's had them overheating, but when they got Intercoolers, they all run fine. (The Intercooler is the kind of thing that Microsoft should have put in there in the first place, but oh well.)

Why do you need a fan? Are you putting it in a poorly ventilated area?
I'm just saying this, because mine runs just fine and after many hours of play it at most feels "warm" to the touch, never hot.
Also, the extra $100 for the premium system gets you a little more than just the hard drive. You get the wireless controller and a headset. Don't know if either of those things appeal to you, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

The 360 does get hot enough that it may ruin certain components inside, so all it takes is one time of having poor circulation in the system and you're taking a serious risk of reducing its longevity. A difference of ten degrees is huge if it means prolonging the life of the console. The effects of the heat aren't always going to be immediately apparent; if the console is running at the threshold temperature, it may take awhile before it starts to noticeably affect the system, but by then it will be too late and the damage will have been done.
After a single hour of running Oblivion, the CPU temp of the 360 reached 146 degrees Fahrenheit (source). After an hour of Oblivion on my computer, the temperature barely reaches above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. I'd expect some increase, but a whole 45 degrees? That's pretty pitiful. If I could get the 360 temperature down to at least 120 degrees (which I can), then why not do it, especially if it reduces the chances of having a component go bad later on?
The reason why I only mentioned the hard drive is because most of the other stuff that comes with the Premium I don't want anyway. Differences between the Core and Premium: Hard Drive, wireless controller (a difference of about $10 from the wired one), Live headset (worthless to me, since the only time I can go online is at school, and even then I won't want to play multiplayer games), HD av cable (no HD television), and ethernet cable (I already have three 25' long cables). So I'd basically be paying $10 for a controller upgrade and $90 for a 20GB hard drive (of which only 13 GB is actually usable). That's still not a very good deal. The kicker is the hard drive; I could get an 80GB external hard drive for $100. Paying $100 or $90 for a 13GB hard drive is ridiculous.
But really, all I want to know is whether both of the fans blow outward or if one is blowing in and the other blowing out. I'd think that they'd both blow outward, but using a passive intake in a case that cramped for a system that produces a lot of heat seems rather stupid.

Warranties are useless. They don't last forever, but the advantage of Llamma's highspeed fans, or watercooling, lasts for as long as you own the system. The Intercooler is useless, and the fanstand works, but not as well as internal mod cooling.
Really, what you gain by internal cooling justifies the warranty loss. If you get a good cooling system, you should never need to use your warranty anyway.

Seriously, My first gen 360 was utter crap. It would seriously overheat, And I mean in like 5 minutes. When this happenned I sent it away, My second 360 did the same thing despite being in a colder place. Now with my 3rd 360 everything is fine, I left it for atleast 18 hours and as jones said it is only warm to the touch. You get a years warranty with it and I really see no point of building external fans if not to serve you.

If you want to be sure it will run, buy a small fridge, like college students use. Cut a window in the front, if you use wired controllers drill holes to pass them through, and then seal it up. Put your 360 and a "moistor magnet" in there then all you heating problems are gone.
For a less expensive one, just elevate it. Like if it's on a table even an inch or so and that includes any object above or around it's sides. I do the same thing with my laptop and haven't had any problems with heat.... well once and it's back wasn't elevated.

you could always get one of the intercoolers and relocate the usb jack and hook up a seperate power supply just for the cooler that way you burn out the xbox's usb and whatever else that is close to it. its only like 5 volts and next to nothing in amps. you could find a wiring diagram for a usb cable and butcher an old cable to hook it up.
