controller problem

Hi

I bought a Dreamcast today for cheap with all the coards 1 control and Street Fighter III (although it is really scratched and i doubt it will work), when I plugged the control into the first port it does not work at all. I have also used the same control on a friends Dreamcast and it works flawlessly. Is it possible that it might me something in the console or the port itself?

i posted it here first and when I realized the Dreamcast forum is dead I posted it in Technical Questions and Answers, then Marshallh moved it
