i was thinking about buying one of these for christmas, but they're really expensive. So i decided to buy one with a broken lcd and get the lcd for $250. the only problem is that i don't know where i could get the broken computer for cheap. Any ideas?

Your better off just buying the macbook normal. I have a Black one with all upgrades. I love it, WinXP and Mac ftw!

Um, he wants a laptop... maybe you should read before you go all fanboyish.
Personally I wouldn't recommend getting a mac laptop, my friend got one in august, it's broken two times (one was logic board, then the other was a lose ram stick by the apple repair guy :/ )

I've found the best deal to be in Apple's refurbished stuff. The 1.83Ghz white Macbook is $949 and the 2.0GHz white is $1099! So you're saving $200 dollars, getting the same 1 year warranty (or optional 3-year AppleCare), and best of all, there's no difference between the brand-new and refurbished products! So with this, and a RAM upgrade from OWC, you've got an amazing Apple laptop for just over $1000, and no one will ever be able to tell it's refurbished. (including you!)

obviously some people here have never purchased a refurbished product with problems. about 50% of all refurbished products I've purchased recently were defective and obviously not refurbished at all.

my guess is that if a laptop takes more than 30 seconds to fail, it will be accepted as working and sold. sometimes getting a full product warranty with local service/return is worth far more than saving $200. RMAs are a hassle.

but if you want an apple computer, get one and enjoy it. not exactly my style, but some people get on fine with them.

As I see it, the key difference between the Macbook and the Macbook Pro is really screen size. There are other things like the Pros likely have more powerful CPUs, larger hard drives and things like that. But really again as I see it, it's about screen size. If you can make do with a 13" or you can't survive without a 17" you know what to buy then.

Also when you go to buy your computer, do a quick research for things like price of ram, and other simple things that you can buy 3rd party. I've heard that the prices that Apple charges for ram are more then stores or online prices. Just a heads up.

I love Apple computers. That said, I've bought Apple Refurbs and had tons of problems with them. No company is excluded from having bad refurbs; when you buy refurbished, you're taking a chance. Heck, I've bought new Apple products and had them fail. Statistically, it's going to happen, nothing you can do about it.

As far as the laptop in general, the major difference between the Macbook and the Pro, IMO, is integrated graphics versus a dedicated graphics card. If you want to play games on your laptop (and since it can run Windows, don't say it can't play games) you need to go with the Pro. Aside from that, check eBay for damaged ones, or craigslist. If you're willing to go that route, it might be worth looking into a refurb, if you're willing to take a risk.
