Flashback 2 Portable Scrapped

Post by vskid »

Ok, because of interest, I'm going to make a Flashback 2 portable with a 6 game switcher.
I have a PSone screen (I might get a smaller one and save the PSone screen), a 6 game switcher, case, and 7.2v 3300mah NiMH battery. All I need is a FB2 (and controller, right? if so I can get one from a thrift store), so I'm interested if anyone has one they'd like to sell, or what store are they at.
Here is my concept. It is very rough and not to scale, but you get the idea. The battery will go in somewhere, there should be room almost anywhere inside.
I'll get started cutting down the switcher soon, and major construction will start as soon as I get a FB2. I'll also make tutorial, or at least try.
And if anyone is interested in buying it when its done, expect it to be in the $100-$200 range.

If you can find some way of cutting the dang game switcher down to size it would help alort. And one tip, don't run the game switcher through a cartridge slot, cut the main cartridge off the end and hardwire it onto the board. I\n my experience with those switch units, the little sliver pins on the main cartridge are made of a thin layer of some kind of sliver metal and chip off really easily. If you want to run it through a cartridge slot, hack a Combat cartridge to replace the end of the switch unit.

Yeah, thats what I was going to do. The switch buttons are made so that only one can be down at once. I'm gonna throw out that part, and just have 12 jumper pins in a 6x2 configuration. Then I can have a single jumper to use as a switch and still have it possible to only have one game selected at a time.

Good, this should be really sweet when it's done. You should make this a how to type of thing, I have all the materials to do this and would really appreciate a tutorial.

Well, you're one step ahead of me, I don't have a Flashback 2 yet. What stores carry them?

Wal-Mart, Target, Shop-Ko, Best Buy, sometimes even Lewis. Or you can try ebay stores. I saw one FB2 premodded with a PS1 LCD for $50 on an ebay store, not a bad deal. Or you can put up an ad in the trading post and get one used. I got mine used from somebody on AtariAge.

Ok, I got a FB2 at Wal-mart for $30, is that a good deal? I haven't opened the unit itself yet, incase I can get a cheaper one. My younger siblings had a ton of fun playing on it last night, maybe I'll figure out a way to have the 6 cartridge slots and the built in games.

That's about the cheapest you can get one new. There are three revisions of FB2 boards, A, B & C. A is the first one and the biggest. B is the most common and is a midsized board. And I've never worked with a C board, yet anyways, but they're the newest and smallest. I've seen A and B boards and they are both pretty small, a difference of a few cm on either side. But I've never worked with a C board before, so if you get an impossiblly small board, post some pics of it because I can find out what to do.

Ok, I opened it up. I also figured out that Genesis controllers work on it :D . I hate the Atari ones.
I decided to use my PSone screen to get rid of parts from my N64p attempt. Should i have two controllers built in? Some of the built in games need both of them for one player games, so I'm guessing real Atari games will too (never played a real Atari before  ). And on most of Ben's 2600p's, they have a big silver knob towards the bottom, is that a racing wheel? If so, how is the position of the wheel figured, because I have a junked plug and play game that has a d-pad that can turn.
Because of the low power usage of the FB2 (the 7805 hardly gives off any heat), even with a PSone screen it should get 4-6 hours of playtime out of my 7.2v 3300mah NiMH battery.

No games on the FB2 use the racing controller. On ben's portables the silver knob is a paddle. On the FB2 you can unlock paddle games be entering in a secret series of movements with the d-pad. So it would be handy to have a paddle built in. I'd also say to hardwire in both controllers too, I own two ataris and some games do need it. I don't know if the paddle from the Tv game thing would work. It has to move in an ark (rainbow) shape not all the way around when you turn it. I just tested a PSOne screen with a FB2, it works great. Also, genesis controllers work on a lot of systems C64, Atari, Amiga, ect. Me and a_v_p_p_v_a have a lot of FB2 hacking experience, so turn to us for further advice on this project.

Ok, my neighbor with the wireless I was using moved, so I won't be on for a week or so until we get DSL. This is on hold til I get my grades up and that, hopefully finish before or during Christmas break.
@ a_v_p_p_v_a: I think it is a C board, it ends at the bottom of the cut out things that are flipped over for the buttons. I can't get pics right now, but I will in about a week.
If anyone needs to contact me, I check my vskid3 at gmail.com account at school daily.

I scrapped the project because I don't have the time, I still might add the game switcher to the FB2.
