But the XBOX360 seems to be just an upgraded XBOX without all the capabilities, In fact I think the XBOX is very Mac-ish (before OS- of course)

The design, the electronics, However, I see the DVD format for the games to be a blunder in the design...Since the DVD format is going away to HD-DVD and Blu-ray (or will both of them pull a Beta-max...hmmmm)
If the 360 is an "upgraded" Xbox it's one hell of an upgrade!

I've owned both and I find little to be similar between the two. If one wanted to get into semantics though, it could be argued that every new console is derivative of the one that came before it. 8)

I'm not worried about the whole blu-ray/HD-DVD thing. Ben and I discussed this in the podcast and we are both of the opinion that it is quite likely that neither format will "win". If there were 1 standard, then I would agree that it would have been a mistake not to include it with the system on day one.

As it is though, with two formats in existence, I think Microsoft was wise enough to realize that it is possible that neither format would succeed. Sony, on the other hand, has a vested interest in blu-ray succeeding since it is their format so they are going to do everything they can to try to make it succeed.

In the end, I think the media format will make a minimal difference in the console war. The PS3 media will have a larger capacity than the 360 and Wii media, but most of the third party PS3 games will inevitably be ports of 360 games and so the higher storage capacity of the blu-ray media will not have as large of an impact as some may think.

Should be interesting to see how all this plays out over the next few years! :D

I've actually seen Xbox games that said 1080i before, so the xbox is completely capable of running HD resolutions, the question is how well would it run, say Halo2, at 1080i. My guess is like total lagtastic crap.

What games, exactly? Also, this thread has gone extremely off topic :(.
One must consider why can't the wii's nice and original control scheme be joined with a powerful CPU. So what, it's more expensive, screw appealing to the masses. Games are for gamers, that's how they started. Dedicated people making games and sharing them with their friends. Why, exactly, must we appeal to everyone? Nintendo may have a good money-making scheme, but in the end, gamers suffer by their move. Of course, this is mindless conjecture. It may be the first step toward a more immersive experience, but the gen after PS3 360 and Wii is the one I want to see. Because it's gonna be one awesome time to live. So what, Wii fails? We learn an important lesson, move on. But, if it succeeds, we get a next-gen filled with Ps3 power, Wii innovation. That's the best part. This gen is just a gfx upgrade, except the Wii. What does the PS3 bring? Nothing, just a mix of stuff from 360 and Wii. 360 brings what? Nice online, which was basically available on the Xbox. A wireless first-party. Last gen Wavebird, early IR controllers, too. The Wii? A nice control scheme, otherwise a smaller GC. Online, like the 360 probably. Mii thing, just another avatar of sorts. Sd reader, last-gen xbox thing, 360 does it too. At least it has back-support of GC. First nintendo console to do that, which is pretty awesome.
To sum it all up, next-gen (Not this gen, ps3 xbox360 and Wii, but after), is where it's at. New GB, if Wii's successful, awesome successor, Ps4 doubtful, but sony's persistant, even if they have almost no excusivity. Xbox 3, which will integrate with my PC, cell phone, and such, if M$ has their way. Looks pretty awesome. Oh, yeah. Forgot that PSP thing. Like the DS, it's just a gimmik. Nothing coming from it is any good.
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

Hardware man! There's a limit to what a specific GPU can output!

Yeah, but the ATI in the Xbox is weaker than the one in the Wii.

Nvidia you mean.

anyway as I stated above, the Xbox can do 1080i, but the games look like crap on it. The game was like some desert storm game or something, and yes it did look and play like total crap.

EDIT: oh Enter the Matrix supported 1080i as well as some others, but 720p was the highest resolution that was popularly used, though 480p is readily available.

as far as we know wii does have a significantly lower clock speed than xbox360 and ps3 but whos to say how capable the GPU is, so far as i know they havent released specific specs on the GPU yet (just vague suppositions that its "more than 3x as powerful as the gamecubes") and considering just how freaking awesome some games (RE4 for example) look on the gamecube i think it would probably be capable of 720P and 1080i but i doubt nintendo would imlpement it :( but just because something isnt HD doesnt mean it wont look fantastic!

The original Xbox only did 480p. The Xbox 360 does 720p and 1080i with a firmware upgrade coming soon to give it support for 1080p.

Also, the Xbox live that you hook into with the 360 is a far different beast from the one you connect to with the original Xbox. There really is no comparison between the two. If it wasn't still called Xbox Live you wouldn't even recognize any similarities between the two other than the gamer tag.

And yes, this has gone way off topic...

MORE OFF TOPIC: Speaking of Sony, I now think the Blu-Ray format will go the way of the Betamax. Reasons: Price & the availability of players. Think about it, if that blue diode is so hard to manufacture, then how much players do you think will get to the masses?
