Regarding video game boxes/manuals/artwork

Post by wallydawg »

Am I the only person in the world that still saves these things? When I buy a new game, I save everything. I mean everything. All my GBA games even still have the little pastic bag that houses the carts. All the boxes I have on display in my room and the manuals (for games that came in cardboard boxes) I keep in a binder for easy viewing. Playstation, Dreamcast and all that I keep them in the cases of course.

Now what I'm really starting to get sick of is loose (disc only) games. It's getting especially bad at Game Crazy, where they most of the older games that I am interested in (mainly Dreamcast) behind the counter. I can't tell you how many times I get dirty looks when they bring out an empty jewel case and I tell them that I don't want it anymore, or employees that flat-out refuse to let me see all their complete games for said system, which is prolly less then 10 games since they only have 15-20 in stock at a time. Don't even get me started about the evil EB/Gamestop juggernaut, where I found a copy of Magic Pengel for a good price. I always check inside the box to see if it has the manual (which also seems to irritate the employees. Maybe all the clicking from me opening and shutting the boxes I don't know). It didn't, so kicked back to the shelf it goes. I'd say more than a healthy amount of their used games (40-60 percent, depending on the area) are disc only.

I might be a little anal-retentive here, but I am not totally heartless in the matter. I can understand not saving the cardboard game boxes, such as the N64, Gameboy Advance, and all that. But as for the current generation games there is hardly any excuse for loose games. The plastic game case has a spot for the manual, why wouldn't you use it? This is why I like collecting Genesis games. Since most of their releases came in the plastic boxes, it's still fairly easy to come across complete games in the wild.

I'd like to hear what you guys go with this stuff, on both sides of the coin. Hopefully someone here still saves this stuff and goes through pretty much the same thing I do when buying used games, and I'm not on the edge of full on dementia or anything here.

I normally save all the boxes/instructions/etc, but after awhile I tend to be forced to get rid of them due to lack of space.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same as Gannon; I only keep the boxes if it's a rare/valuable product, like older RPGs or if they're games that I really like.

I hold on to newer games that have real cases, but I don't have a single older game cart with the box and intructions.

I'd throw out a buch of other worthless crap I own before I'd junk anything from my games. I am in need for a new shelf though.

As a pack rat, I save everything of material value. Paper and cardboard have virtually no material value.

Wallydawg, I think you have psychological issues. :P

I always keep everything until the store's return policy says I can't bring it back. For PC hardware (my drawing tablet, laptop, PC components, etc...), I keep the box and packaging until the warranties expire. But after that:

GBA game cartridges go in a cart wallet thing, and the instructions get put away. GBC games get individual plastic boxes, and their instructions get put away too. Playstation games and music CDs are stripped of their plastic shrink wrap and the sticker on top; the booklets stay in the front of the jewel case. PS2 games and DVDs stay in their cases with the manual, but I throw away the other promotional junk. PC hardware boxes are junked, but install discs and any literature that goes with them is filed away.

Honestly I don't particularly care to have empty boxes lying around, but there are a few exceptions:

- My "Video Computer System" heavy sixer is in its original box
- I have an intellivision and 6 games locked away in their cardboard tombs (hopefully never to be seen again)
- I think the box I bought my Genesis (rev. 2) in is still in the attic. (Still has a K-mart "$99" sticker on it!)

I keep and display only the boxes that are the newe hard plastic. But my shelf for those is relay running out so they might just be thrown into my closet from now on. And i try to keep the boxes to eery console like thing I buy. But I do not pass over a game at a store if it does not have origional caseing.

I don't keep the cardboard boxes, but I have all the cases and instruction books for the disc based games. But Playstation jewel cases break SOOOOO EASILY!

It's like 100 times worse on Sega CD/Saturn cases.

Well back in the days of cartriges I never really saw the need for the manual and so that and the box either got lost, or thrown out. With the PlayStation the games that we had that came with manuals we (me and my brother) kept them in the cases. I do the same now with PS2 or Xbox games, I pull the manual to look at something if need be and then return it when done. And with PS2 and Xbox games there is no box, well unless you consider the case the box and on the latter I keep that.
