Case Design.

Post by Jake-Haze »

I have a nice looking (I think) case design for a SNESp, I just need to know if anyone could make it?

Here's a green version,

Sorry for the typos on the design thing, it was late when I drew them up, ask questions if you want.
PLUS, I know MS-Paint sucks, but I'm not good with CAD programs yet.

You deserve major props if you can make that into a real prototype!!

I'm thinking about making a mock-up out of balsa wood or something like that, I just wanted to ask, does anyone know the measurments of a SNES Mini Motherboard with a PSOne screen on top? also, When I try and make it for real, Would aluminum make good sides with an engraving plastic top and bottom plate? Thanks.

i could probably do it, but i might need something to make it around, because i dont know the dimensions, i dont know at all how big it would be and exactly where to put the jacks and button holes. But I could probably get it made for you.

first thing is first, get the full design drawn out, where every curve needs to be think it out, figure all the button wholes and the mechanisms

then get you dimensions of you hardware and build a mock up using the dimensions and fabricate a well designed model (balsa, cardboard, both are excellence prototype materials, cheap and easy to work with)

after than figure out the exact lengths of whatever material you plan to make the final product out of and build it completely...

do that and I think you will be pleased with your results

I do like the case design though, very unique, is the grey area a seperate piece or is it just a different place tha is painted, or is it curved slighlty?
(see what I mean by figure every curve out)

Ok, So, I made a cardboard mock up of this design to see how it would rest in my hands and whatknot, and I have to say that I like the feel of it and all the button positions lie under where my fingers want to go naturally, so, no hand strain :) also, it feels sturdy, even made out of little cardboard piece, so that's also a good sign. I'll let you guys know when I plan to make the actual case, (as in like, another mock up that's properly measured) once I get the SNESmini and plastics and stuff. So, later.

They grey areas are places i plan on trying to have raised a bit, to make more room inside the case, but if that turns out to be too difficult, I'll just have it painted differently there. :P

actually I would go for having the two raise areas since you would make them aout of dirrent pieces and having a lot of small simple pieces put together is a lot easier than one really complicated one

I see what you mean, but how would I connect to two pieces? also, would it be a good idea to make the grey areas out of like, brushed aluminum or would it make it too heavy?

Here's the latest update,

I've added some places where i want to put thin pieces of brushed aluminum or something like that more or less for style than comfort or like,... I just put it becasue I though it would look cool, ok. xD But, steeler, you won't have to worry about the Aluminum unless you know someone who does water cutting or what ever it is, I do, but hey, you can if you want.

Oh yeah, the piece that goes around the screen controls, that's going to be made of aluminum too.

I've got a GOOD cardboard mock-up made, not exactly like the picture, but close enough for my liking. I really do thing that it will look better once it's made with plastic rather than cardboard, because i had to use tape and the c-board doesn't have good edges. It looks trashy but hey, what can you do? Anyways, I've designed it for a 5" screen, which is how big the PSOne screens are, right? Also, I've got it set up to hopefully have a power jack and headphone jack too, I'm now looking for plastics and thin aluminum to start working on yet another prototype. I think I'll make one more using the final materials, that way I can see what does/doesn't look right and I'll get some time working with the stuff so I don't screw the good one up. Peace.

start and select are to close to the screen they wont fit there because of the PCboard, and controls may be a little to close, looks pretty solid though, sometimes the case is the hardest part though
