SNOAC Coming in November?

Post by wallydawg »

Just saw this at the Video Game Central website. It appears that someone has made a console that will play both SNES and NES games. Not much on the site yet about technical specs and whatnot, so lets kick around some speculation now. Will it be a bootleg SNES with a built-in NOAC, ala the Tristar 64, will it be the SNOAC that we have all been waiting for, or will it be something that our mere mortal brain capacities cannot even begin to fathom?

That is absolutely amazing. SNOAC or not, this means a reliable and fairly inexpensive place to obtain SNESs. I'll be buying one as soon as I have the cash (read: next Christmas, lol). However, I couldn't help but be struck by something in the description...

What you just read can be better described as "fine print." I'm thinking this thing won't support SuperFX games, just like Radicas don't work with Sonic & Knuckles, the SegaCD, or the 32X.

[EDIT] Hmm, you might add SMRPG to the list as well, it had special onboard hardware as well, if I'm not mistaken; something to do with the lockout chip.

The processor on the SNES actually had a 6502 compatibility mode (much like the Apple IIgs) and thus the main thing holding NES carts back from working on the system was the cartridge slot and the changed PPU.

Or so I've read.

Your correct. But hey as you've said Nintedo is the only company to never have backwards compatiblity with their [home] consoles. We already know that Nintendo isn't behind this as they're likely putting effort in to porting or setting the Wii up to emulate the system for the roms of the NES, SNES and N64.

I still think 65$ is a lot... And they haven't been tested by one of us either. They may very well be inferior to original Snes and Nes consoles. I don't know if that extra money is worth it. The insides might also be bigger than an original Mini Snes since it has to be able to support 2 types of cartridges which means a lot of space on the circuit bord.

I still don't get how that will work. Slot loading disc dives are usually incompatible with non-standard size discs. Maybe they'll make some sort of adapter? A plastic donut with a huge hole for the mini disc, perhaps? (Sort of like a 45 spindle adapter, but backwards.)

Almost $70 is rather expensive, but for all you SNES/NES fans out there it looks like it will be worth it (provided it's realand it works).

$65 dollars for something like that... If it's a real SNOAC, I don't see a problem with paying that much, after all they haven't had one on the market yet. And before someone brings up the cost of NOAC chips, how long have thoughs be on the market, and so are they expensive to make?

Also, the NES had a slightly modified instruction set IIRC, and an integrated APU with the CPU, so they'd need to hardwire one in with the snes APU
Anyways, I'm thinking that it's just a NOAC and a SNES clone (not OAC). Makes me want to buy one and a chinese SNES clone just to check the hardware similarities and compatibility.

Speaking of SNES clones, has anyone on here actually bought one and taken it apart?

Man, we should make it a board project to buy one of these and test it.
