Also, for anyone who is talking about macs, if you haven't used an intel mac, you can't talk. They are almost 100% as hardware-upgradable as "PC"'s. As my pc is custom, I know exactly what processors I can get for it (prescott and conroe, em64t as well, thus any P4 and Core2duo(Extreme)). If I were to buy a "PC" (let's say an alienware desktop for example) and a Mac (Any desktop), almost any upgrade for the "PC" I can use on the Mac.
Not processors or video cards.

Standards

Post by Lt.Shinta »

While we are talking about standards it is important to note that Mac is high up with them. While the wirless version may not be a good point to make but other features such as the accelarator sensor, firewire 800, 10/100/1000 ethernet and express card are important and impressive features. While being the cutting edge doesnt always mean it is a good thing. Example? Blue Ray and HD-DVD. Nobody knows which way it will go at the moment and most likly one of these will be redudant like beta tape. As for firewire 800, speeds of 786.432 Mbit/s appear far more appealing than the current 480 Mbit/s for USB2. Before anybody says "express card sucks" I will have to state that at the moment it is not widely supported (as any one with a MacBook wanting wireless Broadband would know) but the industry is moving towards this. Evidence to support this lies in the fact that Dell have put this in there XPS and Lenovo has also adopted this new technolgy.

As for anotherperson post on iSight. It is not a large feature that should be looked at but when adminstrating a large network of over 400 computers it allows a different level of security. Such that Administrators can EASILY set it up to take a snape shot on logon and allows admistrators to compare who is using the computer and compare that to the picture we have on the database.

Yes it all comes down to what you want in a computer. lol. Firewire is another way to conect perhial deivces to computers. Some micrsot bords do have firewire but it is not very common.

I dislike seeing arguements in favor of MacOS in regards to virus and malware. MacOS is less at threat from those risks not because of its programming, but merely because of its much lower usage and popularity throughout the entire industry.

Hackers generally seek to do the most damage or effect the largest group possible, and the largest group is that of Windows users.

I can easily see, in some crazy alternate reality, the MacOS being the market monopoly criticized for its vulnerability, and the lesser-used Windows being totted for its resistance to viruses and malware.

As a gamer I actively choose Windows over MacOS. However, if I happen to buy a Mac PC, I'll definitely be spending some time exploring MacOS before installing XP.

You are aware that they have had whole labs of people work to make a torjan that would work on OS X, and it took years. Further even if you were to get a virus, the likely-hood of a virus doing the damage simalar to that done on a Windows box is nearly non-exsistant. The way the OS is setup (boot partiton, system files partition, user partition) means that if you did get one it would only affect your user profile and not curropt the whole OS. Going further, OS X has a real firewall and is started when the other services are started, so you don't have traffic coming/going til the firewall starts up (like in Windows).
Hackers generally seek to do the most damage or effect the largest group possible, and the largest group is that of Windows users.
Hackers are not just out there to cause trouble. You know there are a fair number of them that just do thing like make viruses to see if they can. They make it in responce to a challange.

Yep and I bet there's another one were everyone is still using UNIX or Apple II computers and thing like viruses, trojans and malware don't exsist. But really we don't know if that's even remotely true, so what's the point in bring it up.

Yeah.... Well I think it's obvious that if you're a PC gamer you're going with Windows. Any game on Macs are older, mainly because the company had to nearlly rewrite the game to work on the PPC platform. If you really want to play around with Macs and see if you like it go to CompUSA, MicroCenter (if you're near one), GuitarCenter, or an Apple Store.

Really, if you buy a Mac, and you have a windows disc, you've got the best of both worlds. I personally just got rid of an old powerPC G3 mac, to make room for my new PC (although, in reality, it was the CRT that took up a ton of space), moved my only remaining PPC mac into storage, and put my main mac into a different room. I'm not going to get a new mac soon, but if I were to, I'd get one like the nice desktop I have now. Gaming is a non-issue with bootcamp, a comparable windows desktop would be more expensive and wouldn't run Mac.
@ people talking about Mac=not mainstream=no viruses, you're full of crap. Mac's very structure protects it. http://weblog.infoworld.com/enterprisem ... _inhe.html explains some of me point

Actually, that was meant to be a supporting example for my arguement that the market segment determined the so-called vulnerability of windows versus a Mac. However my initial arguement was incorrect, so that example doesn't really mean anything.

I wonder how long before Apple offers MacOS for all PC's just like Microsoft sells Windows. I've already sunk a considerable investment into a custom-build laptop, so I haven't the opportunity to buy a Mac, but I'm still interested in trying MacOS eventually.

That's a big ol' NEVER to your question, since Apples main source of $$$ comes from Hardware. It's becoming less and less propriatary, thus their profit is becoming less...

wachootalkinbout cheaper than buying a comperable windows desktop. Macs are almost the most everpriced boxes in the industry. The only one under $1000 is the less than impressive mac mini.

Well, I am not for or against either one. PCs have their pros (gaming) and cons (very unreliable at times) and Macs with their pros (very reliable) and thir cons (not that good on gaming). It mostly just boils down to what you are using it for and your views on Macs and PCs. I prefer PCs only because of the gaming. If I could play BF2, Doom 3, and GTA SA on a Mac then I mught own one

PC: Plays everygame/Bloatware
Macs: Plays everygame/Great OS

Make sure its an intel mac, or else i'd say a PC is better. You can use Boot Camp to use Windows. See with me its easy to judge seeing as i have an Intel Mac (Macbook) and a Intel PC (Dell)

Honestly they're the same, except Macs look so much hotter and can run both OS's legaly (Had to add seeing as i have OSX86 for Dell...i dont see the problem if i own a mac)

Anyway, i'd say Macs are good if you like to listen to music, watch videos, wanna make videos, and use Garageband! PC's are better if you wanna browse the web/program, and play some games....but with the intel macs they are about even

Problem is, a Mac is usually $200 more than a simmilar PC (Counts screens and stuff).

Ok, basicly: You want Intel Macs, not PPC!....or else you will miss out on the cool features.

yea the only real downside to the mac is their significant premium in cost as compaired to antoher PC (sometimes 200-400+ dollars for equivalent) what i dream for is an x86 based amigaOS that is as efficient as the olds ones and just as versatile AMIGA FOREVAR!
