how to charge batteries without a charger

Post by daguuy »

i know different types of batteries use different types of chargers. but i don't have every type of charger and i don't want to buy every type of charger so here's my question. do all batteries charge by connecting them to a higher voltage limited current power source and disconnecting them when their charged? so if i hooked up a nimh AA to a 300ma 2v power source and kept an eye on the voltage, would it charge? same with alkaline, nicad, and lithium (though i wouldn't want to charge lithium batteries without a charger)? or is it more complecated than that?

I think thats all it is, just reversing the chemical reaction that the battery does to power stuff. Why would you charge alkalines? Isn't that dangerous/hard to do? For my 7.2v nimh I just hook it up to a low amp 12v wall wart and figure up how long it should be plugged in and set a timer for that long that will turn the wall wart off (for 24hrs, I gotta take it off before then).

Or just buy a universal charger. They're pretty cheap, and they eliminate tedious (and sometimes dangerous) guesswork.
