PS2 hard drive question.

I've been using several 80GB drives in my PS2 to store all of my games and I swap them out when needed. I've gone through 3 adapters so far swapping drives (the solders on the IDE port give out after tugging on the drives) so I came up with an idea to get around this.

I purchased a IDE drive cage. I put the drives I wanted into it. I extended the IDE and power cables out the back of the PS2 and into the drive cage. I installed a switch so I can pick which drive I want powered up to use.

Now here comes the problem. I can't get the PS2 to detect any of my drives. The drive will power up and spin but the PS2 doesn't see it. I searched the "Big I" and found an obscure post that said the IDE port was weak on the network adapter and could only shoot the signal only a couple of inches before giving out. I managed to get the drive detected using a 3" belt but that was about it anything longer and it wouldn't work.

Now I have read about all the infamous hacking on PS2s this community has accomplished and I was hoping someone could help me out with this.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Installing a switch that allowed power to only one drive at a time would probably make it work.

EDIT: Oh, my bad, didnt read that middle section. What are you using to extend the drives?

Basically I take a standard IDE ribbon cable and molex extention cable and run it out a slot I made in the back of the PS2. THen I connect them to my drive cage. Nothing fancy. Straight through no pins crossing or anything like that.
