Level System

Another propbably rejected idea by Kurt.

Since Luc's making Titles based on skill (level), we should have forums accordingly.

Now that Ben has unlimited bandwidth, I see no reason why we shouldn't.

It also cuts down on spam and such (Not really, just kinda moves it around).

What if we had 3 or 4 levels of forums, based on skill and accomplishments.

Let's call these levels "L1", "L2", "L3", and "L4"

L1 is someone who has been at the forums for under 6 months and/or has not completed a portable or other significant accomplishment.

L2 is someone who has completed a portable or has been at the forums for 6 months, unless they haven't learned anything, in which case they stay in level 1 awhile longer.

L3 is for those who have completed 3 or more portables.

L4 is for moderators only.

Users can read from all the forums, but Level 1 can only post in level 1 forums, Level 2 in level 2 and level 1 forums, level 3 can only post in 3,2,1 etc etc.

This way, your answers to your questions are from people with equal or greater experience as you, eliminating useless posts such as "Did you make sure you hooked it up to the battery? Mine didn't work when a power source was connected." and such. Of course, that's an exxageration, but you get the drift.

Good idea? No? Post your opinion, please.

bad idea, very bad idea. what you are suggesting is basically segregation of the forum based on skill level.

Yes, some very experienced members (like me) haven't even completed a portable (I'm working on it though, case is being designed in my spare time in school), but still know everything about them. And 3 portables is a lot anyways, it would also be segragation by how much money you have to complete portables.

I see where you were going initially, but the titles system covers that without pissing people off. The closest we'd ever come to that is an "elitest forum" where we could have intelligent and mature discussion, not a mosh pit like 42. Even that's unlikely, though...

Nintendo Forums has that. The Knights of Hyrule section is a very intelligent and organized discussion, but the rank KoH is not easily attained, and most resent that. Plus, you are limited to a n00b board for 3 days where you can only ask questions such as "Where is " + x + " item?", or "How do you beat boss " + y + "?" (all other topics are locked by mods).

Though it might be nice for some of us, it would be horrible for others.

That said, someone PLEASE tell me to get my ass in gear. I can't seem to motivate myself to finish this N64 portable, and I don't get the time at home to play Majora's Mask.

Instead of having all of those levels so that newbies couldn't post in 1337 forums, you could just have a "Serious Forum" where if you screw around, you get a severe punishment. The point being, that if you have something stupid to show off, do it in the forum 42, not the Serious Forum.

I think a better solution would simply be to introduce more forums that address more specific topics. You have to admit that a forum to talk about every that doesn't fit anywhere else, that you are not allowed to spam in, is a little bit of an oxymoron, not totally since obviously some posts are truly of no value to anyone but it makes the place seem kind of overly harsh since more light hearted topics aren't posted for fear of being classed spam and locked so that the system would remain fair.

For instance, we could have a "Gaming Industry Forum" to talk about stuff going on in the gaming industry, like E3, companies financial prospects, PR, and stuff like that, an "Upcoming Titles/Hardware Forum" to talk about games or consoles (or video cards for the PC gamers among us

) that haven't been released yet and how they look, a "Modification/Hacking Forum" where non portable stuff can be shown off or progress threads can be started, and maybe a "Picture Hevy Forum" and a "Picture Lite Forum" where it's OK to make duplicate threads so people on DSL and Dial-Up respectively have a place to go, and any others the staff/members thought up that were thought useful.

I guess that was a little OT but I but wanted to present an alternative to a rank based access system, which I think is a bad idea, since I was at a board that was positively torn apart, largely thanks to many of the the members elitist behavior even though there wasn't a formal system to support it I don't want to see the reverse of that situation here where a system encourages that kind of behavior.

Any way I know my version doesn't actually stop spam but it takes some of the bite out of it, since now the serious and useful threads that are not directly portable related won't be squashed and affected by spam.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread and I apologize since I think there are some run-on sentences in this post.

Guys, what your asking this forum become is a general video gaming forum, and it's not. It's the forum for benheck. If you really want stimulating disscussion about other such issues, you'll need to find a forum that specializes in them. We're mainly about portablizing. I'm not quite sure why we'd need all these other forum sections when we already have everything we need for portablizing. 42 in the obligatory general discussion that's found everywhere. It's should be the least used, since it has the least to do with what we're about. Hell, were it up to me, I'd close it up, and get some of the vagrants either working or booted.

Point is, you should have joined this forum to learn about and build portables, which most of you did. But if you're comming here for 42, you should leave. You're just freeloader, and no one likes them.

To put it bluntly the mods, Gannon and Ben have made comments about the Elitist's forum. Ben, Gannon and most of the mods agreed it's a bad idea as we don't want to have a tiered society, as memebers go everyone is equal. The labels will only be like a ribbin or metal, distictive honor and nothing more.

Further adding a seperate section for members will only put more work on both Gannon and I. We're kept fairly busy, and having to move members in and out of a selection so they can post in that seperate forum would add more work, work we don't need or want.

Also, no we are not adding more forums. I wasn't even in favor of the Sega forum. Discussion of the gaming indestry isn't that big the begin with. If you really want a forum to talk about that kind of stuff on, many members have message boards and forums of their own, talk to them about it.

And lastly about the bandwidth. It is not unlimited, it's a lot higher then it used to be. But my point is that just because you have more of something doesn't mean you have to use it.
