So here it is. The government trying to stick it's nose where it doesn't belong when there are much larger and important issues to be dealt with.

If this is made law it will create a federal study on the effects of gaming on youth. Not too big of a deal, but I think we can all see where this eventually could lead.

I'm curious though. Since I'm a bit of an old fart around here, I'm wondering what you guys think. If I'm not misstaken most of you are in either middle or high school which means, in theory, you would be the ones being studied.

So how do you feel about this? Good, bad, indifferent?

I feel that this isn't a bad idea.True, I am an extremely violent GTA player, but i think I would like to see what the results are.

i dont like it one bit, their using violence in videogames as part of their election ticket. its stupid

If it were an independent group doing the study, I would feel a lot better about it and would agree that the results could be quite interesting.

When it's the government though, I can't be quite as certain about their motives is all. I can see a lot of regulation coming out of the results of this "would be" study.

I guess time will tell on this one.

I have no interest in violent games, such as Grand Theft Auto.

I'd much rather play a game that requires strategy and thinking than one where you either run something over or blow it up. (war strategy games are OK by me, but I've never been interested in the genre.) Most of my games are puzzles (Blazing Dragons), platformers (Jazz Jackrabbit, Mario, Crash Bandicoot) and racing games (Gran Turismo, NASCAR, Crash Team Racing...)

In any case I'm off the hook because I'm an adult. you darn kids

Yes, and they're very selective about who/what they attack.

GTA had the "Hot Coffee" mod and everybody in Congress was up in arms. It was like it was the scandal of the century or something.

Oblivion had a hack where people could access the female body models in the game and give them a flesh skin so they would be running around naked. Nobody made a peap about that one.

At least I didn't hear about it until just a couple of weeks ago when I was digging around on Gamespot.

I think it's a joke. Unfortunately it could become a very humorless joke if it is used in the wrong way.

I don't believe in the Video games creates violence craze. We are at the peak of video games and children, and violent crime is at an all time low.

i honestly think the people who persue videogames as the cause of problems need to get their heads out of their asses and address more important matters.

I sure hope for the subjects sake they don't use Neo-Geo MVS carts, those things are big!

I really don't care if they do a study (I mean what hasn't been studied by some government or other these days, well except maybe finding a way to make trips to the DMV any less annoying

). So long as they don't place any legal restrictions on what can be bought, sold, designed, or manufactured (etc. if I left anything out) or make it possible to make stupid "My client only did this because of a video game he played" defences in court.

Then again, I don't particularly like the study being restricted to minors, if they do a study it should include everyone and not just a certain group that is thought to be more susceptible to these unknown and possibly nonexistent effects.

Or maybe the dudes who came up with this schee-nangin are just PO'ed 'cause they got PWN3D at Quake

the problem with these "studies" is that they tend to draw the wrong conclusion. for example

kids who play violent videogames are likely to become deliquent and shoot up their school

when the more correct conlcusion may be

kids who are deliquent and would like to shoot up their school also like to play violent videogames

Which of course means that they will draw the conclusion that "If violent people are attracted to violent video games, then all people who play games are violent...

Which is not true. It's like saying that Alchoholics like to drink alchohol. Therefore, everyone that consumes alchohol is an achoholic.

well actually BOTH of those italicised sentences imply that only violent people play videogames.

i guess you lose either way.

also, i didnt say that ONLY vilolent kids like to play violent videogames, just like non-alcoholics can still drink alcohol.

but anways. my point is that government studies just find what they want to find.

Who knows, maybe the study would finally put a rest to the whole controversy and prove violence and video games aren't related in the majority of people
