Cartridge based media
I was just thinking: would you be more likely to buy media in a next-gen format if it was packed in some kind of cart?
I guess what got me thinking was learning about the release of DualDisc (DRM'ed but still new formats are cool any way you slice it) and how now there's even less handling space on the disc.
So discuss I guess.

Do you mean cart as in data stored onto a ROM, or as in an optical disc permanently packed into a cart (like UMD's).

Yes like a UMD. (Nuts I deleted an important part explaining that when I was trimming the post for size I guess it didn't get across to well
)

I think that even on a price:durability ratio, I'd be a bigger fan of optical media if they where kept in a permanent encasing.
Try going to GameStop & getting a mint-condition used CD or DVD game. (PS1 PS2 GC xBox & DC)
The optical-storage gaming generation (last, present, & next generation) will be more expensive to collect in the future due to the condition the media will be in.

That is an issue. I got a few PS2 games from a guy at school and they were all scratched up and I was very suprised they still worked.atari2600a wrote:I think that even on a price:durability ratio, I'd be a bigger fan of optical media if they where kept in a permanent encasing.

Some of my friend's xbox games look like he took sandpaper to them. They still work, usually.lifeisbetterwithketchup wrote:That is an issue. That's why I never buy second hand cd games. You're never quite sure if they will work...
I think the cart's are a good idea, but history has learned us that they usually don't take off that well... examples given:
Mini Disc= Great! My dad even got a special player for it! ....... Which he sold 2 years later cause the format had died...
UMD= great! but far less popular than the SD cards or other flash memory based cards.

Well according to Atari2600a, he thinks we need something like what the Nintendo Playstation was going to use. Something like this, this, and this.
Not a bad idea really espesially for something like BlueRay as the data and reflective material are closer to the surface. But I don't think they're going to do that. You have to add more motors and extra stuff like that to utilize that kind of encloser and as a result the price for making the drive will go up. It's like it's been for the past two generations, when you take you game out of the system you put in back in the case (or some case) to protect in from dust, fingerprints and scratches.

Well sorry about the quality it is from a web cam. That disc is real, it came with my computer about 4 years ago, it's a DVD-RAM disc. Works like DVD-RW but when I put it in under Windows the system read it like a hard drive and the back of the case makes note that you can rewrite the disc up to 100,000 times. So it's logical that it comes in a case to protect it, the case can be open, just that if you use it as a backup tool you don't have to really.
Also I posted it to show that that kind of encloser is exactly what Atari2600a was mentioning. I know that a lot of you are not old enough to remember that in the '80 the idea of a CD being in an encloser like that was those to the the future. And really with the fact that you can backup information like making a phote copy of a paper, and the media being dirt cheap you don't have to have a way to protect it, it's very disposable.
